Dumb Luck
Shot from one night I was blown up and thrown out the door of my humvee. I was hurled directly into the blast hole. By the grace of God, the IED was planted in such a way that the shrapnel blew toward this building, instead of at my flying body.
You can see the what the shrapnel did to the storefront; that’s what all the little holes are about. Dumb luck - had the IED been laid in the opposite direction, I’d be dead. When I climbed back into the vehicle, my massive door was barely hanging from it’s hinges. The bomb went off right next to the door. As I ejected, I was certain I was dead - no fuckin kidding, I really believed that.
There’s not much I’ve experienced that felt as good as still being alive when the dust settled. Inside the adjacent house a guy was “sleeping” in his bed, fully clothed in slacks and a button-down shirt. But of course, he knew nothing and said he had nothing to do with it. Watch the documentary for all the details. The streets of Ramadi are so much fun at 3 A.M.
