War Of The Veil

“Ataturk would be horrified. Women are being advised to check with the imam if it is all right for them to have cosmetic surgery or get a divorce,” she said. “The education ministry is filled with people from religious backgrounds.”

July 22nd, 2007 at 7:28 amThe feeling in Turkey is this: “The narrow shirt of secularism is a little too tight and choking for Turkish society”. This how entrenched Muslim fanaticism is becomming in Turkey. It does not bode well for the region.
There’s been a new guy delivering hoagies and wings from the restaurant up the street. Doesn’t speak English too well so I asked him where he’s from and he said Turkey. “Oh, you’re here to go to school?”. “No”. Do I have anything to fear or did he figure he’s going to get out while the gettins’ good?

Is he a convert to Christianity? Alot of Muslim converts settle here. It wouldn’t unusual. There is a pogrom going on in Turkey right now by jihadists to wipe out the remaining Christian enclaves. Or he could be a westernized Turk that sees the writing on the wall.
Personally, I never turn my back on Muslims…even I like them.
July 22nd, 2007 at 8:24 amDan, sorry to take so long getting back to you. Yesterday was one of my two days out a week. Had to jump into the shower and then catch a train 45 minutes from then. Excellent micro-brew pub in Center City. Twice as expensive so I might have to cut down to one day a week. Got back about 6 last night and could barely see the TV let alone read a PC.
The delivery guy? He’s only been delivering for about two months and I usually order twice a week. More conversing than I want to do. Not that I’m a snob but the contact is for no longer than to accept delivery, ‘thank you very much, bye-bye’. When he first started there was some confusion over the phone number. Procedure is call when they get to the front door and I’ll go down to get the stuff. But, sometimes during the day the office people leave the front door open. I live in a safe suburban neighborhood so they can do that because there’s a lot of deliveries to all the apartments. Now, I had prior to finding about the new guy been giving serious thought to buying pepper-spray because, ‘hey, you never know’. Not that I go outside with them, I don’t go to those parts of town where I’d need something like that. Those days are over. You know how thinking about things and actually doing it, you keep putting it off? Well, when he told me he was from Turkey, I went to the store the following day. Hey, ya’ never know. The guy he replaced was from China, for over a year I never felt a sense of urgency. I keep one on the table next to the lazyboy and the other under a blamket folded up on the bed.
