Dirty Bomb Scare: NY Sets Up Vehicle Check Points

Yesterday we had this. So today, New York responded with this:

The NYPD has modified its counter-terrorism posture Friday because of unverified intelligence regarding a dirty bomb risk.
This change includes an increased deployment of radiological sensors — including those mounted on vehicles, boats and helicopters as well as those carried by NYPD personnel.
In addition, vehicle checkpoints are being established in New York City, including lower Manhattan, and at certain approaches to the city from neighboring areas.
These efforts are not in response to a verified threat, the department spokesman said.

NY stays on a high alert status, even when everyone else is at a lower status. If any city is prepared for the worse case scenario, NY is probably tops in that department.
August 10th, 2007 at 9:15 pmRadiological checkpoints being set up in all the five boroughs. Looking at area near/at 34th St. Bloomberg has issued a statement ‘unverified threat’ in response to increased internet chatter or some internet post, I don’t know which one.
Checking vehicles at checkpoints in Lower Manhattan and other routes of entry into that area.
Waiting to hear from someone there. Will post more as I get it.
August 10th, 2007 at 9:29 pmHave heard from another board that a “National Warning” has gone out — I’m assuming this is for LEO’s. CNN has run a breaking news banner on it, but the lid is a little tight on this, and I guess that’s fine.
Betting if there is a device and it’s located, we will not hear much about it….
August 10th, 2007 at 11:27 pmThose radiological sensors must be real sensitive. About a year ago my brother was standing on a train platform at Suburban Station in Center City Philadelphia. It’s an underground five track wide station. Evening rush hour and everyone’s waiting for the train and then as my brother described it, ‘it was like they just appeared’ there was this SWAT team on the platform he was on. Dead silence, hands at everyone’s sides and the SWAT team started calmly walking around as though they were looking for something. Then they found “it”. The radiological sensors that must be tiny little things mounted wherever had gone off. Obviously silently in an office somewhere. It turned out to be an x-ray technician’s radiation exposure badge. Never mind. Then the SWAT team quietly disappeared as quietly as they had appeared. Dam, those things are sensitive. The amount of lead that would have to be used to conceal radiation from those sensors would weigh so much the tires of the transporting vehicles would explode from the weight. I’m not a radiation expert but I think it’s pretty difficult to move radioactive material around. Even these suitcase nukes we’ve heard about need maintenance and some say that the terrorists don’t have enough nuclear knowhow to maintain enough to do that much damage. I hope. Right now cell phone psychoes, blasting headsets and kid’s beeping toys are the most annoying things on the trains. I’m still going up to NYC next month for the demonstration. I’m sure New York City is all over this. I started using ear plugs when going to NY so I didn’t have to spend the hour listening to the annoying sounds but I do take them out before we go under the Hudson, just in case, I want to hear it if the train blows up.

August 11th, 2007 at 3:36 amAbout a year ago my brother was waiting for a train during rush hour at Suburban Station in Center City Philadelphia. It’s an underground station with five tracks. He said, “out of no where, like they just appeared” there was this SWAT team. They quietly walked around the platform as though they were looking for something. And then they found “it”. It was an x-ray technician that had one of those radiation exposure badges on them. Going home after working in a hospital. Never mind. Those radiological sensors are all over the station, though you can’t see them. As quietly as the SWAT team appeared they as quietly disappeared. They must have larger versions of these radiological sensors and NYC must be all over this. You can only get into Manhattan by tunnel or bridge and I think the ‘glow’ would be seen miles away. I hope.
August 11th, 2007 at 5:51 amSorry for the double posting. The first one went up and then about a half hour later it was gone. So I did it over again lo and behold the first popped up when I sent the second. Oh, well. Maybe the terrorists did it.
August 11th, 2007 at 5:55 amCNN just reported an arrest in NYC!
