Al Sadr Denies LA Times Report
Let me just cut to the chase: He’s full of shit. But so is the L.A. Times. In the story, they try to make it sound like some big-deal “secret” dialogue is going on between Al Sadr and the US. This is a half-truth. What’s going on, and has been going on for some time, is a lot of different dialogues between a variety of elements in the Mahdi Army and the US military, designed to both persuade them that the US isn’t going anywhere fast and thereby encourage them to stop random attacks on the coalition, Sunnis, and rival Shiites, and to coordinate with them in bringing down Iranian elements of the Mahdi Army that are running renegade, and who will in the long term turn on Al Sadr as they exclusively serve Iran’s interests. Al Sadr has a bizarre relationship with Tehran in that they pretend to support him wholeheartedly, and currently do a lot for him, but both parties know that ultimately there is a divergence in each other’s interests. Al Sadr cannot rise to the top in Iraq if he is seen as Tehran’s man, and Tehran knows that they cannot count on Al Sadr as a long-term puppet. So in the mean time they make nice, help each other, and plot against each other.
Iraq Media:
Baghdad, Sept 13, (VOI)- Spokesman for Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr denied on Thursday reports being circulated about direct contact between the Sadrist bloc and U.S. and British forces, noting mediation efforts being made by some Iraqi parties to stop the hunting down of Sadrists and for the release of their captives.
“There are no direct negotiations between the Sadrist bloc and foreign troops,” Salah al-Ubeidi told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) by phone, underlining that the bloc was not authorized to meet with “occupation forces.”
U.S. newspaper the Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday secret negotiations believed to have been started in early 2006 between the Sadrists and U.S. officials.
The paper asserted that the talks started to bear fruit only recently.
Al-Ubeidi said that some Iraqi parties are exerting effort to pressure the U.S. side to stop arresting Sadrist elements and for its captives to be released.
“The bloc has the right to authorize certain groups to negotiate with U.S. officials,” the spokesman added, highlighting that the Shiite bloc is trying to pressure the Iraqi authorities, which in turn will pressure U.S. forces to release the captives.
The Sadrist bloc, part of the Shiite UIC list, occupies 30 out of a total 275 seats in the Iraqi parliament.

‘Al-Qaida in Iraq takes heavy losses
Sep 13 09:25 AM US/Eastern
BAGHDAD, Sept. 13 (UPI) — Al-Qaida militants in Iraq have taken heavy losses in two joint U.S.-Iraqi raids north of Baghdad, the U.S. military reported Thursday.
In one operation involving more than 1,000 U.S. troops and Iraq Special Forces in the Hemreen mountain area and Diyala river valley, three al-Qaida fighters were killed and 80 others were arrested, the Army statement said.
The report said four of the arrested men are considered senior leaders in the terror group, Kuwait's KUNA news agency reported. U.S. air support was used to conclude the raid, after which a major weapons cache was found, the statement said.
Elsewhere in Salah Al-Din province, U.S. forces arrested 12 al-Qaida suspects and destroyed an entire house packed with explosives and weaponry, the report said.”
What a fucking joke. Where are the “heavy loss” headlines when dozens of AQ die in a single day. Lefty media at work again. Make it seem like a big deal when 3 AQ are killed, make them seem like super warriors.

September 13th, 2007 at 5:57 pmI also heard that al-sadr has been having secret talks with the American Dental association about using his mouth as the before picture illustrating the effects of dental reconstruction. Its possible it may convince him to invest in a breath mint.
September 13th, 2007 at 6:05 pmIf he looses two more teeth he will be able to save on floss by unwinding a bit-o-turbin.
