“Landing A Blow To An Israeli Target”

J-Post:

Advisors to Syrian President Bashar Assad are pressuring him to respond to the alleged IAF attack by “landing a blow to an Israeli target,” the Kuwait-based Al-Jareeda reported Wednesday. According to the report, Israel targeted long-range missile batteries that were brought to Syria from Iran. Israel also is believed to be preparing to attack Syrian nuclear installations supplied by North Korea. The report said five IAF fighter jets carried out the initial attack.

srael Radio quoted the Kuwaiti paper to the effect that the group advocating a military response is being spearheaded by Assad’s brother in law, who has met in recent days with senior Hizbullah and Hamas officials in an effort to draw up an operation plan.

The Kuwaiti paper also reported that the Syrian army has begun drafting reservists from the armed corps, missile corps and anti-aircraft units, and quoted “sources in the know” who said the draft was a response to Israel raising its level of readiness in the north.

According to a report by The Nazareth-based al-Sinara newspaper Wednesday, the IAF targeted a joint Syrian-Iranian missile base in northern Syria. Reportedly, the Iranian-funded installation was razed to the ground.

The report claimed its information was gleaned from an “Israeli source.”

An official in the Bush administration told the New York Times Wednesday that in recent days the IAF has flown over Syria several times in an attempt to gain intelligence on a number of suspected nuclear facilities Israel believes have been sponsored by North Korea.

“The Israelis think North Korea is selling to Iran and Syria what little they have left,” the official told the Times, adding that the alleged strike had not necessarily provided evidence to confirm the intelligence.

Meanwhile, North Korea slammed Israel for the alleged air strike, calling it a “dangerous provocation” aimed at breaching Syria’s sovereignty and upsetting peace and security in the region.

“North Korea harshly condemns the said incursion and expresses solidarity and support of the Syrian nation in its righteous cause of safeguarding national security and peace in the region.”

Also on Wednesday, the Lebanese daily Almustakbal reported that since the alleged IAF foray over Syria last week there have been severe disturbances in Lebanese communications systems and cellular frequencies.

On Tuesday, CNN reported that the IAF had likely targeted weaponry delivered to Syria that was possibly intended for use by Hizbullah.

CNN said the operation involved ground forces and that the aerial strike left “a great hole in the desert.” Although it did not name a specific source, the network cited “US government officials.” The jets have been identified by the Turkish authorities as IAF F15Is, Israel’s long-range bomber, after fuel tanks were found in Turkish territory.

A US military official said the IAF planes penetrated “deep into Syria” to carry out an air strike that succeeded in hitting its target. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because it was an intelligence issue, said he did not know what that target was.

Syria has called the incursion a “hostile act,” but has been largely silent on the details of what happened. Israeli officials have refused to comment.

There are IDF pilots right now, chomping at the bit for a chance to dogfight with some towelhead Syrian pilot. I hope Syria is stupid enough to try something…They’re dead bodies will be food for the vultures. I’d love to see gun camera footage of Syrian fighters being blown out of the sky and falling as little pieces of shit on the ground below them.

What I don’t understand about this is why Israel is keeping mum while some anonymous US military source is revealing a little but not much about the strike. What got hit? And why isn’t anyone saying what got hit? I’m dying of curiosity — it had to have been something VERY significant for Israel to have risked rataliation from Syria and the wrath of the international community. I don’t see how a stash of standard materiel from Iran destined for Hezbollah fits that bill.

    Laura:

No matter what Israel does to defend itself, it will incur the wrath of the international community…who in my view is just a bunch of anti-semites. Israel is fighting for its existence. Any defensive move on their part will automatically get pooh-poohed by the world, because it is easy for the world body to sit back in their easy chairs, drinking their smowine, and criticise a country that is surrounded on all sides by people who want to kill them just because they are Jews. If the rest of the free world were in the same position, they might react differently.

    Damn the world…go Israel.

    Dan The infidel,
Well said. It doesn’t matter what israel does, most of the world will condemn them for one simple reason: they are filthy anti-semites. That is why israel waited for the Arabs to attack in 73′ as opposed to a preemptive strike - b/c they were afraid of world condemnation.
Israel is surrounded by barbaric enemies on all sides. they are a beacon of hope and dmeocracy in a fragile region, a front-line soldier in the war against evil.
    Let’s support the good guys.

    I just pulled this off of Fox News. It still amazes me how corrupt and self serving this traitor us;

Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich has said on Syrian TV in Syria that the U.S. presence in Iraq is an illegal occupation and that it was, “based on lies” and “dishonest and crooked from the beginning.”

Kucinich is touring the Middle East, which included a stop in Syria where he told a Syrian TV interviewer that he was honored to have the chance to meet with Syrian leader Bashar Assad, whom he said should be “respected and appreciated” for his role as a peacemaker.

    Thanks Jim Jam.

And this one’s for Eric and anyone else who wants to hide their little(or big) heads in the sand in the face of Islamofacism. It ties in nicely with the debate here.

Don’t fight back. It just pisses off the world and makes more terrorists.
    ========================================================
“Don’t fight back! If you just lie down and let yourself be conquered and subjugated, all will be well. That’s essentially the message here. And the views expressed here are by no means unique to the Arabs; they are quite common in the U.S. also. Rashwan’s statement, “Al-Qaeda has changed from a medium-sized group to a big network; it has become a franchise and a model for potential self-recruiting terrorists,” is absurd on numerous ways. For one thing, the group already demonstrated in the 1990s a capacity to attack on an international level. But even worse is the idea that the U.S. response to 9/11, being responsible for a buildup, is therefore wrong in itself. Certainly, as we have often argued here, it has not been pursued as it should have, but the answer is decidedly not to make no response at all. Imagine an article in 1943 tut-tutting that the U.S. response to Pearl Harbor had led to the Japanese Navy growing from a medium-sized to a large force.”

    Greetings:

In Israel, the tail does not wag the dog. Israel WILL attack its enemies when it is in its interest to do so…public opinion to Gehenna. The IDF weighs National security far, far more heavily then public opinion. Think killing the terrorists who killed Jewish Olympic athletes…

Something is going on in Syria. I wonder…do we have US Troops in Syria…SEALs perhaps? Delta? I can think of few things that might be kept mum…nuclear, Biological, Chemical anyone…

Israel did what it did without regard for public opinion.

    Hi Dan,

Am Yisroel chai!!! I’m all for Israel, visit as often as I can. But I still don’t understand why someone in the US government if blabbing vaguely while Israel keeps quiet. Today I saw two different scenarios about the target - one suggesting that it was a joint Syrian-Iranian missile battery, the other that it was some nuclear material provided by North Korea. Whatever, I think (hope?) that it means that the long overdue strike to take out Iran’s nuclear facilities is imminent. Taking out a missile battery would help to limit the capacity of Iran to retaliate using Syria… Oh well. I’m biting my nails, though.

The Israelis aren’t going to disclose sensitive targeting info to the public. I’m sure Mossad is enjoying all the confusion surrounding whatever the mission of the IDF was…
Disinformation is just as important a tool in the fight against terrorist states as is actual information. Keeps the enemy guessing and scares the living shit out of Syria…

Comrades, I’m afraid you are deluding yourselves. The govt of Israel is led by and full of traitor/sell-outs who make Harry Reid look like a combination of General George Patton and Winston Churchill.

The Olmert govt, following the post-2004 Sharon govt’s lead, has abandoned the security of the Israeli people in order to hand over their heartland to their deadly enemies…Yet the people still do not rise up against them.

That is unfortunate, because now a massive terror attack against Israel (much bigger than 9/11) is inevitable. I estimate 50-300,000 dead.

At that point, the remaining ~4 million Jews in Israel will probably be ready to…WAKE UP FROM THEIR COMA. Too bad it will take such horror to do it.

Until then, expect nothing helpful from the toothless lion of Judah.

Trial run against the new Russian anti-aircraft missiles. No problemo. So now the real raids will come, against the nuke installations. Probably wait till the wind is strong from the south. Be a pity if the hot stuff blew onto Iraqi territory.

Yeah, but the military is not. From what I have been told upper echelons of the military nod their heads sagely then go out and do what needs to be done.

The Mossad operates with very little DIRECT political control. Their one mantra is…preserve the Jewish state and preserve the Jewish people.

Listening to the Israeli govt is much like listening to Sin Fein…sure, they supported Irish independance but it was the IRA that did the heavy lifting (that was a moral neutral comment-I do not support the IRA nor do I compare the IRA to the Mossad other than in that one small point.)

    Jewish Odysseus,
I agree with you the Olmert is a terrible PM. I would further assume that you, like all decent folk, loathe Amir Peretz (former DM). BUT to characterize Israel as a toothless lion is ridiculous. have you not been following the news? An air and ground op behind enemy lines while flying over TurKey is toothless? special ops incursions into Gaza are toothless? Granted, Israel has been restrained with ham-ass and the rocket launchers in gaza but still, i cannot find as much fault as you do. Also, your doomsday scenario is ludicrous. if that kind of attack ever occured, Whoever perpetrated it would be obliterated. Syria or iran or whomeever would cease to exist - and they know that. Moreover, its in their strategic interest to keep their attacks smaller so israel cannot “justify” a response. Also, your numbers are wrong. There are 5 to 5.5 million jews in israel. BOTTOM LINE - I hate the current gov’t too but you give the politicos too much credit. In the end its the IDF who will ultimately make the decisive decision to act - Lets hope that day comes soon

    Tim & JimJam–

1–The Mossad has been drinking the PC KoolAid for ~15 years, since they signed onto Oslo and put their chips on slimy “allies” like Arafat, Abbas, Dahlan and co. Gee, that sure worked out great, huh? No, the Mossad has been degraded even worse than the CIA. Give it up.

2–The IDF has many great men & minds, but their performance in Leb. in 2006 was piss-poor. Now they cannot prevent daily shelling of a city (Sderot) inside Israel by some scruffy terrorists. Let me say that again: THEY CANNOT PREVENT DAILY SHELLING OF A CITY INSIDE ISRAEL BY SCRUFFY TERRORISTS. **THEY HAVE LOST THEIR EDGE.**

Special ops in Gaza in 2007? BFD, they controlled it w/ease 35 years ago. That’s called LOSING GROUND, folks, and don’t think the jihadis don’t realize it.

My doomsday scenario is exactly in agreement w/yours: The Arabs will continue to pick away at Israel, on a small-scale, until they hit them w/something so big they will HAVE to wake up. By your logic 9/11 cd never have happened, since it “was in AQ’s interest” not to awaken the sleeping US giant. As we know, the Jihad has a different logic from you and I.

In fact, you may be wrong, if Iran has 15-20 nukes in a few years, they may be able to PARALYZE Israel from effectively retaliating to a massive terror catastrophe…So I will be wrong, too, since even 50-300,000 dead will NOT lead to an Israeli awakening.

What is so pathetic is that Israel has really only shown determined anti-terror effort for ~20 months in the past 15 years (4/2002–12/2003), AND THAT 20 MONTH EFFORT WAS FABULOUSLY SUCCESSFUL. Imagine if they had kept up that effort for 180 months instead of just 20?

Brothers and sisters, We must not build our house upon sand. We must build it upon the ROCK of TRUTH. Even ugly, difficult truth. We must not deceive ourselves.

The people of Israel are in a coma, and they will not awaken until they are hit by something so hard it wil FORCE them to wake up. Right now, ~12,000 Israelis have been killed or maimed since the 2d intifada began, and that has NOT awoken them. THAT is the truth.

    Amazing. And pathetic.
