Karbala, Sept 7, (VOI)- The representative of the top Shiite cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Karbala said on Friday that security authorities were incapable of protecting security in the Shiite sacred city, accusing some parties of plotting to topple the government.

Addressing Shiite Muslim worshippers during the Friday prayer in al-Hussein shrine in Karbala, Ahmed al-Safi said that “the city has witnessed a deteriorating security condition recently.”

“Some of Karbala’s parts are not safe, as these neighborhoods witness assassination operations targeting some officials and ordinary people and all these operations are carried out by masked gunmen,” al-Safi added.

Karbala had witnessed during the observance of a Shiite occasion two weeks ago clashes that broke out between gunmen and police forces, where 35 people were killed and over 130 injured according to the Iraqi defense ministry’s estimates.

The clashes took place in Karbala while the Shiite city was receiving hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims heading to the shrines of Imams al-Hussein and al-Abbas as a prelude to celebrating the birth anniversary of Imam al-Mahdi, the 12th Shiite Imam.

Al-Safi expressed astonishment over the security condition during the visit, asserting that reinforcements were not sent to the city and members of the operations room did not arrive as the ministers of interior and national security were abroad during al-Shaabaniya visit.

Al-Sistani’s representative asserted that some parties are plotting to topple the shrines of Imams al-Hussein and al-Abbas and then Karbala and then “to topple the government.”
However the Shiite preacher did not specify these parties.

“We need a campaign to teach the citizens how to perform their religious rituals…it is everyone’s responsibility,” the Shiite cleric concluded.
Karbala is 108 km southwest of Baghdad.

All this guy has to do to stop the shit is to declare a fatwa against all of disparite Shia militias. If he does that, the rest of the Shias will turn against the militias and destroy them. Otherwise, it will take another military operation to dislodge and destroy them….starting with a .50cal enema up mookie’s ass.

Go over to Omar’s blog from inside Iraq,
    http://iraqthemodel.blogspot.com and read their
thought about turning to Sistani to solve Iraq’s problems.
It really is interesting - just two guys who live there,
and their report that you won’t read in any newspaper.
To summarize in one sentence: They get it, and it is encouraging.

It is the failure of secular rule that has given impetus to the rise of religious rule. Look at the recent Turkish elections and read the comments of regular people; and this despite the obvious failures of the religious oligarchy in Iran.

The idea of embracing death, comes from the Koran, which promises Paradise in only one instance…the death of the believer in jihad. In all other deaths Paradise is not guaranteed. So rather than depend on jin, these Salafists depend on jihad.

Sistani might spend alot of his time inside a compound, but he is a revered leader in the Shia world. He is E.F Hutton.
When he speaks, every Iraqi Shia listens.

That sight is interesting but it lacks a clear understanding of Muslim culture. This whole issue is not a question of politics as much as it is a revival of Islam.

To counter jihadi influences in Iraq, the Turkish model of
governance is the best example. And that idea of seperation of Mosque and state, should be guarded as fiercely in Iraq as it is guarded by the Turkish military.

The trouble in Iraq is that they have no Kemal Attaturk to look to as an example. The best example that the Iraqis have is maybe the Medes. That era in their history prior to Persian conquest.

For me, I take my queue from Ibn Warriq, Spencer, VDH, Shoebat and Phares.
