Baghdad, 20 Dec.- Tribal leaders and representatives of Iraqi Sunni clans have visited the tomb of former President Saddam Hussein in Tikrit, north-west of Baghdad, a year after his death.

On the first anniversary of the execution of the former dictator, leaders gathered to pay homage to him and one newspaper, al-Quds al-Arabi, decided to honour him.

One leader from the Biji tribe told the TV network, al-Arabiya, dozens of local representatives from the provinces of Salahuddin, Nineveh, Diyala and al-Anbar went to Saddam’s tomb.

“There were also people from Shia zones like Bassora and al-Amara,” he said.

Eyewitnesses quoted by the newspaper al-Hayat said dozens of people also went to the mosque in al-Awija, the village where Saddam was born to visit his tomb and media reports said there was a strong security presence.

The former Iraqi dictator was hanged on December 30 last year, but due to the Islamic calendar this year his anniversary coincided with the Feast of the Sacrifice celebrated by Muslims on Wednesday.
