Najaf, Jan 26, (VOI)- Unknown gunmen shot dead a sheikh from the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s movement in the Shiite sacred city of Najaf, a police source said on Saturday.
“Unknown gunmen shot and killed Shiekh Yasser al-Mudhafar, last night, outside his house in al-Jamiyah quarter in northern Najaf,” the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI).
The source gave no further details.
Meanwhile, a key figure from the Sadr’s movement told VOI “the al-Mudhafar assassination came within a series of attacks targeting the symbols of the Sadrist movement.”
Najaf, a sacred Shiite city, is located 160 km southwest of Baghdad.
