Photo: Richard Reid’s Shoe Bomb Replica

I often wondered exactly what that thing looked like. Dave Bullock over at Wired has a replica:
Luckily for the folks on American Airlines flight 63, Richard Reid is a man with very sweaty feet. If he had kept his cool and put some talcum powder in his shoe bomb, the fuse would have lit and the detonator would have triggered the plastic explosives. When he tried to use a match, he was subdued by passengers and arrested when the plane landed.
This shoe is not Richard Reid’s actual footwear, but a near exact copy (a few sizes smaller) of his device.
