Hollywood Blames Gloomy Oscars On Bush

Why not? He gets blamed for everything else bad in the world…

From an article by Tim Graham at Newsbusters:

In their post-Oscar coverage on Monday, Washington Post writers suggested that Hollywood’s celebration of dark movies with dark characters has a political genesis, that it came from moviemakers depressed over the Bush re-election, Iraq, and global warming. In his front-page piece, reporter Hank Stuever theorized:

But these were dark movies — the feel-bad films of the year — conjured up in what movie people seem to collectively sense as grave times, hatched in producers’ offices and on writers’ laptops not long after the 2004 election and amid increasing setbacks in the Iraq war and gloomy environmental warnings. Some of the filmmakers and actors wore orange ribbons or rubber bracelets to protest alleged incidents of torture by the United States at its prison in Guantanamo Bay, and in Afghanistan and Iraq — the subject of “Taxi to the Dark Side,” which won Best Documentary Feature.

When not offering a surfeit of death and gloom, Academy nominees this year focused, in at least some metaphorical way, on all the looming issues:

Lovers died in a time of war; the thirst for oil took precedence over humanity; greedy corporate types stooped lower than low; a killer roamed the desolate U.S.-Mexican borderland.

In the Style section, reporter William Booth touched on the “dollop of politics” in the Oscar festivities, noting documentary winner Alex Gibney’s hope that America would lurch left: “Let’s hope we can turn this country around and move from the dark side to the light.” More Bush as Darth Vader. The hot fashion accessory was apparently orange ribbons and bracelets in solidarity with terrorist suspects in Guantanamo:

Out on the red carpet, Paul Haggis (the director whose “Crash” won Best Picture in 2006) said he didn’t know what accounts for all these deeply dark, brooding, troubled films. But isn’t it obvious, he asked, flashing an orange ribbon on his lapel. Orange, why orange? “It’s Guantanamo,” his Max Azria-clad wife, Deborah, said, showing off her orange bracelet, which read: “Silence + torture = complicity.” Suddenly, we noticed — orange ribbons and bracelets everywhere.

You’d have to guess there weren’t too many “24″ fans in that gathering.

These are the same clueless morons that are allowed to give lectures on Environmental policy! They barely know how to live their lives, why should anyone give them a pulpit?!

  4. Wulf

    Yeah, Thanks Washington Post.
We get it. Hollywood hates bush. The low veiwing is because no one cares what a bunch of reality challenged, assholeier than thou, overpaid clowns think.

Were the Oscars on last night?

Wow didn’t even realize. Guess I must have been part of the 86% or so of US households that didn’t turn it on. Regardless, who gives a flying monkey’s butt what these dunderheads think? I heard there’s a couple of open cells at Guantanamo right now, maybe they can find someone there who actually cares.

    That’s ALL you got, Hollywood?

What a weak and lame sub-subculture of narcissistic, overpaid, overly self-important, UNIMPORTANT slobs. Orange ribbons for Gitmo? Exactly what did they wear in support of those prisoners who were tortured under Castro that were just released and told their stories last week?

FYI, Hollywood … NOBODY saw your “flicks” … Nobody gives a flying fook at the Moon about your sophomoric political or war angst tantrums put to film or video. They made no MONEY!

We can only hope YOU go the same route as the former USSR went … You will hopefully run out of funding/money for your useless “weapons” against this country and her people.

You have become the “Edsel” of all the industries in this country …

Early reports are the ratings for last night’s masterbation were lower (by double digits) than the LEAST watched ceremony on record …

Gee … guess the Academy should think about just letting it go directly to DVD, and not releasing it to TV screens, eh?

I never did get any sort of need or thrill in watching someone else’s [practice] of “self-gratification” …

  8. KBar

Those orange ribbons are just another guilty white liberal fashion accessory.

This was the lowest Oscar show ever. The sad fact is, our entertainment industry is powerful in the world. We export our culture through Disney toys, and through Hollywood movies. These guys do have influence, which is why it’s so sad that they are so clueless and they sympathize with our enemies. Orange ribbons! Really. They all get free clothes, free “spa treatments,” etc., to go to this party and self congratulate. Think how you’d feel if all these purveyors were wining and dining and primping you, and giving you free stuff. That’s why these guys think they are so special. And our press and our kids and our culture eats this stuff up.

Screw Hollywood. like they have a clue about anything, they just sit in their glass houses and throw stones all day. Just a bunch of detached brain stems with legs.

OH, and another thing: these aholes should be depressed over their influence on the world. They are liberals because they aren’t too bright, and they feel guilty about their affluence and meaninglessness in their lives. Thanks to them and their liberal friends, they are responsible for just about ruining this country, for the most part. Their environmentalists have strangled energy production in this country for 30 years. Now, we have $100 barrel oil. Our economy cannot run on $100 imported oil. China and India will bury us. They won’t let us build nuclear ( France is 80% nuclear). The Dem cure for energy—they talk about windmills, etc. We cannot conserve our way to energy independence.
They get Congress to subsidize biofuels. Oh, the same biofuels that probably will produce more “global warming” because the cost of cutting down all the greenery wasn’t calculated into the problem. Ethanol causes more smog than oil. Subsidization of biofuels uses more water resources. So water will be scarcer and costlier. Food will be costlier (already is—bread, eggs, milk, paper products, wood, up sharply). This means inflation. Not only inflation, stagflation—no economic growth and rising prices. Remember the 70’s? We could be going back.

The dollar is at its lowest level in a long time. This is a global economy. Global money doesn’t want to come into America because rate of return on investment is down, due to low dollar, and uncertainty regarding future taxes (which Congress elected 2006 and Dem pres . candidates have promised are going up). Our corporate tax rate at 35% is higher than all our competitors, even in Europe . Maybe Pres. Bush has been wrong on several issues, but the Dems promise policies which will help the US commit suicide. Abraham Lincoln said the US would never be destroyed by an invading Army. He said it could commit suicide from within.

The illegal immigration issue is the fault of liberals, and greedy conservatives. They need to fix it, and make sure we cut off immigration from enemy cultures to a trickle, or we will be in the same shape as Europe —quicker suicide.

The press is biased and has never given GOP ideas regarding health care, etc. a hearing. Bush proposed revolutionary fixes for Social Security and heath care tax credits at least 1-2 years ago. Dead on arrival, due to biased press in collusion with democratic Socialists, who don’t know what makes this economy tick. So there!

“Were the Oscars on last night?”

My sentiments exactly. couldn’t have said it better myself!

  15. David Ross

I love it! They still don’t get it and after all there “silent” protests and such the Oscars received an ALL TIME LOW audience. Actually 14% below it’s lowest ever.
Keep it up Hollywood because your recession is going to hit and hit hard.

Lamplighter, don’t forget that all this push towards biofuel is also driving a huge increase in corn based products that is wide and expansive.

    Hey Hollywood,

Frankly my dear I don’t give a damn!

    What YOU think.

  17. Lamplighter

Sorry for the rant. I live near Hollywood and have to take this grief, constantly.

  18. franchie

    Tedders,

we had 3 , actress, mak-up, short documentary

    Lamplighter,

De Gaulle started our civil nuclear independance with EDF, a state enterprise.
Our political system allows that a president can make such a decison despite the “greens” protestations, that have never represented lot of people here ; the protestators were mostly Germans to whom EDF sell a big part of energy though, Spain and Italy are also custommers.
The enterprise makes benefits even though it is a state fonctionment.

so may-be your governor can make the decision too. (Schwarzy ?)

  19. dave

Let’s see, if Obama gets elected, we will get shiney glad handed black movies, if Hillary gets elected, we get strong female movies who both are in touch with the common man because evil GW does’nt know jack. That sum it up?

  20. Ivan the Kafir

They have NOBODY to thank but the fucking media. They say the media MANUFACTURES the news. If the news is gloomy, its because the media WANTS the news to be gloomy. And naturally, the media is trying to generate a public political movement based on how events APPEAR to be moving. Its not WHAT they report so much as what they DON’T report. Events like what these Hollywood types were supposedly affected by have all happened before. None of that is new. There has been corporate corruption long, long before. Is it that we’ve only found out about it now? Wouldn’t that be a sign of this administration’s willingness to uncover corruption or a willingness of political opponents to destroy the current administration by any means necessary. I could go on, but you get the drift.

  21. Spurwing Plover

Those hollywood witless wussietards will blame everyone but their own rotten acting for the fact that the oscars are losing in the nielsens with showing that such award winning movies like SIDEWAYS and MILLION DOLLAR BABY just plain stunk i mean the fact they ignored the big box office winner CHICKEN LITLE and PASSION OF THE CHRIST i hope they lose more screwy hollywood spoiled brats :gun:
