CAIRO, MARCH 11 – An important Saudi religious man attacked the Islamic radicals who criticised him for having danced at a wedding.
“I confess it, I danced and I do not care about those who want to change the weddings into funerals, and the joy into pain,” Sheikh Abdul Mohsen Al-Obaikan said, quoted by an Arab daily.
In an Internet video the sheikh is dancing with a Bedouin sabre, as do princes at the balls during the national festivities.
“The society must free itself from the restrictions imposed by the ignorants,” Obaikan, adviser of the Saudi Minister of Justice, told Arab daily Asharq Al-Awsat.
Saudi Arabia follows the Islamic school Wahhabi, which prohibits singing and dancing and holds strictly separated men from women also during the weddings.
“There is no indication by the Prophet or by any other Islamic religious leader due to which the marriage has to be an occasion of prayer,” the man said.
