One surprise success this weekend is Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, a new doc from Nathan Frankowski featuring conservative commentator Ben Stein. Clearly Rocky Mountain Pictures has engineered a successful faith-based marketing campaign for this anti-evolution treatise. On 1,052 screens, the film finished #8 on Friday with $1.12M, and it’ll wrap the weekend with at least $3.1M. Expelled has dramatically out-performed a documentary from the other end of the political spectrum.

The tongue-in-cheek Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden (Weinstein) from Morgan Spurlock, the Oscar nominated filmmaker behind the hit doc Super Size Me. The poorly-reviewed pseudo-doc generated a dismal $363 Per Theatre Average on Friday in its 102 engagements, and it will likely deliver only $140,000 over the 3-day.

… “Gee, whodthunk, huh? $3 million in ticket sales for a religious-themed, freedom of speech documentary and less than $150 thousand for an American-trasher??? Has the world gone mad?” ….

Took a class my senior year in high school (counted as an English credit) … Logic and Reasoning.

The teacher informed us the first week in that 95% of our grade for the 1/2 year class was to be a term paper ‘proving’ to him that “I exist” … that “I was there” (and the old “I think, therefore I am” was NOT acceptable in our thesis.)

Well, his class happened to be right after my lunch period. In those days we were permitted to leave school grounds for lunch. My best friend and I would head out in the car for fast food and cruising … so, the L and R class got skipped a couple times that first week. The teacher ran into me in the hallway that Friday (after I had skipped his class for the third time that first week). He said he was aware of my course of study (math/science college prep), and my high GPA, and my near perfect daily school attendance … had seen me in between classes in the halls before and after his scheduled class that I wasn’t showing up for, but he had NOT reported me absent from his class the days I had skipped. Knit his brow, shook his head, and asked why I was skipping his class. I just told him “prove to me I’m NOT there …”

The beginning of the second week (and I WAS showing up) of the Logic and Reasoning class it started feeling a bit weird (no, NOT anything sexual … just adversarial). He constantly called on me whenever he’d ask a [pretty much] hypothetical question that the rest of the class would do that “I’m busy looking down at something else so please don’t call on me” shit. By mid-week it was basically an incessant one-on-one open discussion … FUCK! argument … between just me and him, with the rest of the class nodding off … and I was growing a might weary of the unwanted classroom attention (my parents were in mid-messy-divorce mode and I just didn’t need this shit too). That second Friday he called on me AGAIN … I stood, scooped my books from my desk and headed for the door. He asked where I was going. I told him that in two weeks he had proven, for me, that “I exist” and that “I was there” … and also proved there was nobody else in his class … The smarmy smile left his face when I told him I was going down to the guidance office … and dropping his class so he could be alone.

A couple years later I went to my (two-years-younger) sister’s high school graduation ceremony and ran into this teacher. (My sister did not take his class) He remembered me, alright.

And in the end, creativity, individuality, and grace leave us behind in our underprivileged mediocrity the government has provided.

But then … I could be seeing it differently than you.

9:54 P.M. Video, my take on it is this is the life of the average person in the Country’s around the world that are run by Dictators, Thugs and Tyrants.

Which happen to make up 66 percent of the U.N.’s member nations.

That too … and where the socialist-minded politicians in this country, in addition to the eco-nuts and PETA types (digging through the scraps while perfectly good meat sources in the cattle wander about untouched), and the ‘global warming put us back into the dark ages’ groups would have us turn into.

Sorry … I’m just feeling a bit pissed and a little melancholy in this past-my-bedtime early morning hour … A dinner party was given for me Sunday evening (much to my ’surprise’ and disapproval) … and it’s NOT that I am not grateful for the affections of my family and friends (even after mandating NO such recognition was to be given in any shape or form) … it’s just the fact of the gaddamm moment in my life that everyone else felt was in need of attention, contrary to MY wanting it all to just pass as just any other day …

However, not necessarily wanted.

Your highschool story of a teacher pegging you for “special” attention still happens. The son in his last sessions of student teaching before grad in late May crossed one prof and he’s getting the same treatment. The issue was how to handle reporting suspected abuse of a student. So, he asked a few instructors at the school he was teaching at and he relayed that schools method to his college prof. She said the “team” method he proposed did not follow the law and has been on his ass for one thing or another ever since. He suspects this gal will give him the only B on his transcript. This student teaching was manditory so he had no way out of it. The only thing I could think of for advise was to keep every piece of communication between them and maybe later challange the grade with the department head. Plus, the teachers at the school where he’s student teaching may be a little interested in the Profs critique of thier tried and true systom of reporting abuse.

I believe my high school Logic and Reasoning teacher was more into having discovered a student that actually put into practice a [reverse] logic and reasoning on him, and not just shown up in class to nod off …

And at my sister’s graduation ‘run-in’ with him he stated he would have given me an A for the class, had I stayed and managed to have put in writing the little adversarial exercise we had participated in, and MY conclusions, as my thesis.

I see what you are saying about the teaching methods too. My daughter who is in college is highly conservative. And while she is eyeball deep in math/science classes for pre-med, she still has to take the required liberal arts credits for the college. She just hates those profs. because they rarely stay on subject/tpic and choose instead to voice their strong opinions on curerent events and the administration … and then expect when the class has to present work it should completely jibe with [their] opinions, and not stray in the opposite direction … or risk the lower grade in the class.

So much for institutes for higher learning … and open exchanges of ideas and views.
