For certain reasons, this song reminds me of the moments before heading out on combat patrol and night time raids on HVTs. And the whole Go Tell the Mountain thing is, to me it’s like you might as well go complain to a big rock about it, cos 1. there’s nothing you can do about it but go, and 2. if you try to explain to a civilian about what’s like, heading out onto those IED and ambushed roads, you also may as well be talking to big rock. Plus in a way, on the opposite spectrum, the mountain is a metaphor for God, for confiding, well, a lot, in Him.

I remember having lunch with Debbie Harry one day, about a year after her husband produced Gun Club’s second album “Miami” ( great songs but really fucked up at times on the production end by her hubby ) and she was telling me how pissed off at and frustrated she was by Jeffrey, because he seemed lost in some impenetrable depression, and that as a result they weren’t really talking anymore. He died a pathetic death, because the musician’s union wouldn’t pay his medical bills because he hadn’t sold enough records.
There were sad moments; I found him stumbling around in a daze on Sunset Boulevard one afternoon, and had a semi-cogent conversation with him.
I had this grand scheme of putting together an album of Johnny Cash covering Gun Club songs ( can you imagine Johnny covering “Mother of Earth”? ) back when Henry Rollins had bought the library, but Cash, who I knew and had a chance of pulling it together with, died after the Rick Rubin sessions.
Rollins tells me he gave the library back to the Pierce family. I just don’t think there’s another great like Cash that can take these songs to that perfect transcendant place. I guess their voice will always remain Jeffrey’s, which may simply be as it should.
This is one of those rare times the bullshit praise cliche is true: He was way ahead of his time. And in a way, a Great American, because he was all about modernizing rural America’s century old folk music traditions, from blues, to country to cajun.
He saw the grandeur of the nation’s oldest musical traditions, and tried to keep them alive, although he is often so hamfistedly labeled a “punk rocker”.

April 25th, 2008 at 8:30 pmYour both too kind, but until I reach my fighting weight of 235lbs again, I’m forced to consider myself overweight, I’ve dropped about 1/2 lb per day since I began my diet… From past experience I already know that if I start working out it goes to 1 lb a day and if I quit drinking “Liquid Bread” (Beer) it goes to 1 1/2 lb per day… For my metabolism Unlimited fruits and veggies, High protein and limited Carbs is what has always worked for me… Please Note: The one draw back with this program is that limiting Carbs can lead to drinking binges and limiting drinking can lead to massive intake of Brownies, but provided they are both done while working out the program will still work just fine… It’s when these things occur while sitting on the couch that the goal becomes unattainable…
Maybe I won’t be the Nations Health Czar anytime soon, but I will be at my Fighting weight in a few more months! LOL!

Just told LBA tonight that I have lost all my weight from my last pregnancy (8 yrs ago) … since Sept. I have dropped close to 60 lbs doing pretty much what you said above.
Oh, I didn’t carry the weight like a Rosie O`Donnell … More like Kathlene Turner. Still hated it.
But it’s great to be back down … waaaaay down.
Watch salad dressings and all that sauce crap they like to throw on sammies. NO processed food. They are filled with those corn by-products used for sweeteners and fillers, and those are fattening.
Nothing fried. If you need a potato bake or boil it, and limit whatever butter or butter-sub you use.
Try pita bread for sandwiches …
NO sugar. Loving Splenda in my morning coffee. No unnecessary sweets or deserts … If need be, sugar-free (as with my above frozen ‘job’) … and don’t be afraid to enjoy a sliver of regular pie or cake if the opportunity (party) comes up. It’s NOT torture. It’s common sense.
Smaller portions. I know it sounds stupid, but I stopped using a normal-size dinner plate. I filled my plate with meat, veggie, and had a huge salad with O/V (or grapefruit wedges in it with the juice squeezed on the salad).
I love Chinese take-out … and found most the places near me now offer steamed versions of dishes with that pesky sauce on the side. Tell them to keep the sauce, and just eat the steamed food and small portion of rice.
LOTS of ice water all day.
And I actually fast atleast one day out of the week.
Then there is a day or two where I eat ONLY a cup of fat-free, sugar-free vanilla yogurt with bananas and whatever fruit tossed in.
Generally, I am a one meal a day person, with an apple or pear for a snack.
I told LBA I’m eating like a friggin’ Buddhist monk these days … but I am NOW thinking about food, since the damn food wasn’t thinking about me.
I STOPPED watching the cooking channel and looking at those recipe pushing women’s magazines too.
