Fish Tales: Former President George H.W. Bush Catches A Mammoth In The Keys

Former President George H. W. Bush caught a mammoth tarpon Saturday while fishing off the Florida Keys near Islamorada, Fla., according to the Florida Keys News Agency.
Bush chose to release the giant with an estimated weight of around 135 pounds — the largest tarpon the 84-year-old ex-president has ever caught, the agency reported. The boat on which he was fishing had a legal harvest tag.
In place of the fishing trophy, a fiberglass reproduction mount will be commissioned to hang in the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University.
Bush, accompanied by former Olympic skiier Andy Mill, wrapped up a weekend angling trip to the Keys Sunday, the agency reported.

Cripes! I didn’t notice that when I read the story
[Islam]orada, Fla.
HEH!
Anyhow, Bashman told me it was silly for them to toss the big fish back because it does damage to itself while being brought in (busted bones and such), and that chances of it surviving are pretty nil.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:35 pmIf it’s been in the ocean more than two years…release it, unless you need to fill your quota of mercury.
135lbs…way to go “41″
Side note; my new-age, idiot brother-in-law went to Miami for a crack-pot conference, he told me he had free time while he was there. (he’s also a fish killing scuba diver…go figure
)
I begged him to book a fishing trip for Tarpon in the inland waterways around Miami, they’re lousy with Tarpon, and, which to my knowledge, are catch and release only. (I might be wrong)
Did he…No…he’s a new-age-idiot-crackpot.
(Damn)…”The people some people marry”.
PS - Kudos to the movie “Bite the Bullet’, from which I plagiarized a line from in the above sentence.
PPS - Want to see the Hottie version of Candice Bergen, check out “Bite the Bullet” and or “The Wind and the Lion”.

Islamorada is the Sport-Fishing Capital of the World…seriously!
April 21st, 2008 at 11:16 pmThe best fishing I’ve ever done was in the Gulf off Naples, FL, on my uncle’s (Lt.Col-USAF-Ret.) boat “The Other.” Everytime we dropped our lines, we snagged a spanish mackerel, or similar sized fish.
(sigh) I wish I could be enjoying the balmy breezes of Naples, right now.
Instead, I get to take my final exams in two weeks.
