WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the Air Force is not doing enough to help the Iraq war effort, complaining that some military leaders are “stuck in old ways of doing business.” Gates complained Monday in a speech at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama that getting the Air Force to send more surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has been “like pulling teeth.”

The Pentagon chief praised the Air Force for its overall contributions in Iraq and Afghanistan but made a point of urging it to do more and to undertake more creative ways of thinking about helping the war effort.

looks like redneck to me haha

and how does one branch of the military not do enough? is there not a chain of command that ultimately leads to the president and the secretary of defense? i doubt the branches are autonomous.

    just sounds odd to me

Sounds odd to me too. I’m sure if the airforce was “tasked” with a job, they’d do it. It’s probably more about “using them”, than about the airforce sitting around and doing nothing.

Not doing enough? Where the f*ck has this eight-ball been?
Perhaps he’s been living in a petri dish?

What the af wants to to control everything in the air. Sounds logical but the infantry gets screwed. Why, because it takes away the UAVs from the army & USMC and the af doesn’t have the man power to fly the remotes cause only F-16 pilots are allowed to play with them.

Further the af sees itself as strategic and tactical ground support is a grudging secound place hense the contempt by the af for Gunships & A-10 crews (I love these guys).

Roger that, the grunts on the ground need a UAV controller/ground ops that can relate to the situational ops on scene.

ie: f**k things up big time, then have another look.

Why does the Sec Def need to ask the Air Force to step up? Cuz the Air Force is not willing! They don’t want to sacrifice an officer’s job (pilot) to enlisted personnel which would allow more pilots to fly the UAVs. That is why the Air Force got rid of the Warrant Officer rank. They mostly want the Air Force Academy Oficers flying their planes. Air Force Officers will always be pilots first versus military officers who lead and command.
