Turkey Bombs PKK Targets In Iraq

ISTANBUL: Turkey said its warplanes struck Kurdish separatist targets inside northern Iraq yesterday in what military sources called the biggest Turkish air operation in northern Iraq this year.

A Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) spokesman said the bombing had caused no casualties.

It was the second Turkish air strike this week on northern Iraq, which the PKK uses as a base from which to launch attacks in Turkey, after an operation on Wednesday.

The Turkish military tends to step up operations against the PKK in the spring when the snow melts, making it easier to move about in the mountainous region.

Clashes between Turkish soldiers and PKK guerillas continued inside Turkey on in the mountainous province of Sirnak.

The general staff said two soldiers were killed in clashes and a mine explosion in the same province killed a soldier and a member of the village guard militia, which works alongside the army in the mainly Kurdish southeast.

l Three suicide bombers and a car bomb rocked the northern Iraqi city of Mosul yesterday, killing nine people and wounding 31 others, top security officials said.

The fourth attack was a parked car bomb which exploded in the southern Al-Tayran area and wounded five people.
