Came close to being hit 3 times while stationed in the panhandle of Florida. All 3 times were on base, the worst being within 20 feet of a payphone that was blown off the wall by a direct strike. I don't remember what happened to my vocabulary but my shorts needed changing afterward.

In South America we used to get wicked lightning strikes. I was sitting in an ammo truck full of ammo during a monsoon. Lightning kept hitting the ground and marching towards us about 500 meters at a time. It was like God was saying to the lighning "drop 500" on every strike.

It hit five of my compatriots on a small hill about 1500 meters in front of us. One was carrying a prick-77. One was talking in it. Both went to the hospital...no one died.

I've been in military facilities during tornadoes and hurricaines and watched the roofs get pulled up and dropped back in place...not sure which is scarier...but being outside in a massive lightning strike will most definitely phreak you out.
