From what I understand by comments ... If the crest had taken him down he would be under for atleast 3 minutes ... and crushed pretty damn good (air from the chest/lungs) like being at the base of a waterfalls ...

Gotta hand it to these bigtime surfers ... I can't grow balls that big ... even if I were a dude!

 drillanwr (hembra blanca típica)

If you have to, you can actually breath the white water foam, there's enough air in it to keep you alive...for a while at least.

no kidding, I've had to do it...not fun.

It's not so much the hold-down...it's the impact on the bottom, which is usually rock.

If one has any kind of doubt...don't go out.

Guys in the Video aren't stupid, they've thought this through, assessed the risks to life and limb, taken what safety measures they could and went for it.

When I was stationed at Hickam I remember going up to watch the Big Wave classic. Didn't happen until the waves reached at least 25 feet. Crazy dudes...

There are waves like this and bigger pretty consistently at a beach south of San Fran about 20 miles called Mavericks. It was a secret spot for decades until the late 90's when surfer magazine published an article about it. The waves at Mavericks are so huge they defy reason as to why someone would get in the water and surf it. Some famous surfers have bit the dust there.
