Hey Pat, I want to go around and post the button with the times and link to your podcast to get more listeners to sign up.
Today I set a reminder to email me an hour before the show. I am confused because the reminder said the show is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on 5/4/08 and on your page at BlogTalk Radio says you have no shows scheduled. I just wanted to give you a head’s up about this in case there is some mix up.
I will hold off posting your podcast connection around until I hear from you or someone else here who knows why there are three different settings.

May 3rd, 2008 at 9:12 pmI missed the waterless toilet add, but if it’s like one I tried in the late ’70’s, a MillBanck (SP?)brand, it works OK if you just remember not to look into the hole before you sit down. It did need water from the urine to keep the seeded bacteria ( from your local sewage treatment facility)going, plus a small amount of electricity to keep the warming element and little stack fan circulating air…when that fan burns out it is a nasty situation. When the “ash” pan of greyish looking powdery residue gets full, it is super fertilizer for the garden. Great for a cabin or addition with no plumbing rough-in.

Commemorate and celebrate.
This Sunday, the 4th of May, in The Netherlands we commemorate those who died in WWII, being followed up by the 5th of May, (uhm……how original of me
), but then we celebrate Liberation day as being the date back in 1945 when we officially were freed from German/Nazi occupation.
Things are shifting a lot since the last decade. We are pushed to commemorate every country who is occupied and sub missed by a foreign nation and are told to celebrate freedom in general on the 5th of May. Hell, being patriotic in a country like mine is not-done these days anymore. But, I could care less.
Although I’m from a much younger generation, I’m very much aware of what happened in WWII due to the history of my grandparents and parents.
I think it’s okay to get informed about what kind of shit happens all over the world when it comes to human rights and countries being invaded by their neighbour-country or a military regime. But at these 2 dates, I get very patriotic. All I want is attention towards Dutch history, my history, leaving the rest of the world for these 2 days for what it is. Especially on the 4th of May.
Anyway, seems to be a sign of the times, attention taken away from a country’s own history only to attend those of other countries. I mean, sure, I live in Europe, but that doesn’t mean I can forget about being Dutch. I’ve got my own traditions and don’t want to give them up for “the greater good” as I’ll always stay Dutch.
After I became a volunteer at the base, it became even more important for me, learning there about a piece of Dutch (military) history that never got mentioned at school during history-classes or in history-books. It was quit an eye-opener and although I’m aware of Europe as a whole, I think it’s a lack of individualism for Dutch kids not to learn anything about their county’s history. And during this process, I started to oppose more and more against these two important Dutch dates getting sold out into a world-wide commemoration and celebration of events that are everything except Dutch.
Having the great honour to meet veterans who actually contributed to free our little nation from the Nazis made that feeling even stronger.
I’ll be proud ‘till my dying day for meeting these great Allied warriors and although they become less every day, being at age, they always stay in my heart.
Who’d ever thought that the little girl that would ask her parents about the great cemeteries with all those white crosses lined up, passed by at holidays, would end up meeting those who joined that great fight. The fight to bring freedom back to Europe.
When I got older, I visited those same cemeteries, then with the knowledge about this particular piece of history, grabbed together from library-books, documentaries on TV and parents and grand-parents who taught me as well. It found it overwhelming, standing there, looking at lines and lines of white crosses, a few Jewish David-stars amongst them. All those men, some of them so young. It still gives me shivers thinking about those visits.
For the past years I go to base on the 4th of May. I know, a fenced military community, but for me this seems to be the only place where I can commemorate the way I want it. Also here a touch of modernism with some young scholar, the winner of a contest, reading out loud a poem that also involves what is wrong with the rest of the world. I manage to grind my teeth trough this until the real important moment. When it’s 20.00 PM, those 2 minutes of silence, when all that can be heard is the singing of birds. Only to get followed up by that warm hum of three Lancaster’s doing a fly-by. As flowers are being laid down, the church-bells starting to echo from far, I see the faces. Jake from the United States, Robert from Great-Britain, Jean-Paul from France, Stanislaw from Poland, Willy from Canada……..
My history, I refuse to throw it away for something that is in focus due to recent political involvement, development or because it’s just “fashionable to be aware of” . My country, my history. Enough mistakes already made in the past where, as it seems, the same mistakes are made again. That’s what happens when you throw away the past, don’t focus on what is really going on in the present and stay deaf, blind and dumb for a future that is clearly.
Like, again being occupied but not having the freedom to say so.
