These clouds could/might be gasses that escaped the ground as the fault was gearing up for the big quake.
I recall from chemistry class in high school that gasses are identified by using a prism. (Remember ROY-G-BIV? … i.e., the colors of a rainbow?) Gasses possess certain pattern degrees of that ROYGBIV as a sort of ‘thumbprint’, if you will …
The sun coming through these possible geo-thermal-gas clouds, plus the moisture in the atmosphere they were mixing with, that have risen would have this effect.
Astronomers use this “method” to determine what types of gasses stars are made up of … and what possible gasses exist on neighboring planets.
Sooooo … if that’s the case here … I’d say what I said above. Could be gasses escaping the ground as the plates below began shifting prior to the actual quake.
May 21st, 2008 at 2:48 pmRefracting sunlight through the clouds, cool looking but nothing out of the ordinary. It only takes the light source being at the correct angle in relation to the water droplets, The phenomena usually is only temporary because the sun is moving in the sky.

May 21st, 2008 at 8:55 pmactually the scientists prooved that prior to earthquakes gasses are emmited from the earth, it happend during that Turkish earthquake in 2000 if im not mistaken, they loocked at the post-factum satellite immages and saw a wierd pattern of clouds, that appeared out of nowhere, and they say that spotting those clouds would be the first and most probable and reliable signs of an earthquake to happen … at least there are precedents to prove it now
