Al-Qaeda network in Mosul disabled
BAGHDAD – Coalition forces detained 12 suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorists in Mosul Friday, including two wanted men who are believed to oversee criminal attacks for the network.
Operations continued to take a toll on terrorist leaders in Mosul when Coalition forces captured an AQI security “emir” in the city whose predecessor was detained April 21. In addition to overseeing terrorist activities in Mosul, the wanted man is believed to direct a group of extremists from Anbar province. An alleged member of that group who reportedly plans attacks and is suspected of involvement in suicide bomb construction was captured in a related operation. Coalition forces detained nine additional suspected terrorists in the two operations.
Also in Mosul, Coalition forces detained a suspect believed to be involved in the planning and operations of a Mosul car bombing network, including the construction and distribution of bombs.
About 130 kilometers southwest of Mosul, Coalition forces discovered and destroyed three terrorist hideouts and a cache of weapons used by foreign terrorist facilitators near Bi’aj.
“The detention of suspected terrorists and the information they provide is instrumental in the continued reduction of violence throughout Iraq,” said Maj. John Hall, MNF-I spokesman.
