Surprise, Surprise, in the btu value of ethanol v. petroleum ethanol loses everytime.
June 24th, 2008 at 5:34 amAnother successful Federal Mafia program, they cheat you at the pump by mandating you buy this damx ethanol then they steal taxes from your wallet to give subsidies aka bribes to the Corporate corn producers in return for contributions aka payoffs to get the mafia re-elected to lifetime jobs! Time for CW2, anyone out there?

geez I knew that 20 years ago…
June 24th, 2008 at 7:31 amThe energy in the fuel is converted to mechanical energy to move your vehicle. Carbon and hydrogen are chemically converted to CO2 and H20 + energy. Ethanol only has 2 carbon atoms and 5 hydrogen atoms + an OH which makes it an alcohol. Gasoline on the other hand has many more carbon and hydrogen atoms. Octane for example has 8 carbons and 18 hydrogen atoms. So if carbon and hydrogen are the fuel, which do you think has more energy per gallon? It’s just chemistry.
June 24th, 2008 at 8:25 amDon’t forget that ethanol is also hydrophilic which means it absorbs water. That water gets carried through whatever is holding the fuel. It can’t be put through pipelines, it drags dissolved crud out of storage tanks and deposits it in your car and causes lots of extra maintenance problems. If you wanted to use the E85 you have to have a special tank and fuel system because of the corrosive qualities.
June 24th, 2008 at 9:18 amFord has specified that in vehicles in states using the 10% ethanol blend you need to change your fuel filter 2 or 3 times more often than normal. I’ve had to change my fuel pump twice in under 80k miles due to the amount of crud build up causing the pump to burn up.
Some of us get stuck with the “Oxygenated” fuel during the winter months and it’s illegal to NOT sell it during those periods.
Of course keeping the tires inflated properly, the air filter clean, and changing your driving habits can all help offset the loss.
June 24th, 2008 at 9:37 amYup, ethanol is already partially oxidized and therefore has a lower available energy content. It is also a polar solvent similar to water and ammonia, which is why it tends to pick up water much more than pure hydrocarbons. If the fuel mixture picks up enough water it actually causes a phase separation, with the ethanol migrating to the underlying water layer.
