I live 20 miles from Salinas,California. The California media, outside of Monterey County, portrays Salinas as the murder capitol of California.
Murders per capita…well, maybe they’ve got a point.
My point is that the Latino gang violence is based in bigotry, pure and simple.
The Surenos (sp?) were kids that were born in Mexico, then came here with their parents.
The Nortenos (sp?) were Mexican kids born in the U.S.
The generations that followed were born into the the gang their elders were in, regardless of place of their birth.
Nortenos bullied and discriminated against the Surenos who eventually started to fight back and it escalated from there.
I suspect California’s not unique in this problem…the story posted reeks of gang rivalry, yet not a single mention of it.
PS - The Salinas Mayor and Chief of Police are Latino and are not addressing the obvious root cause of 30+ years of Latino gang violence in Salinas… it appears to me anyways, that they’re just auditioning to run for the State Legislature.

June 17th, 2008 at 12:44 amhaha, im sorry, its not funny like that, but the whole first minute im thinking ‘why would they shoot a man at a funeral’ and all the people are like ‘he was innocent he was carrying a coffin, its a funeral and they shot him, I DONT KNOW WHY?’, then 2 minutes in the truth comes out ‘he had a gun, he was just shooting in the air’, thats all i need to hear, man with gun shooting gets shot by cops. Theres not even a story there.
