They use old data and statistics to develop flood maps of areas using rainfall, topography and drainage data to approximate what would happen as a 1 in 500 year chance of a flood happening of that magnitude. Few if any of the folks have flood insurance. It would be great if we each did some research and made the best contribution we can afford to help these people. So work through your church, the Salvation Army, the Red Cross - you decide what you think is effective. I was an insurance agent for 25 years. Flood insurance is not part of homeowners policies. It is a seperate policy. It is heart breaking to tell good folks that floods are not covered and never have been part of a homeowners policy. But there are Moms and Dads, Grandparents, young singles devestated because they have lost everything. Often extended family live nearby and they were hit also. Criticism or cynicism can't get them started over. It won't replace their childrens clothes or replace their car that didn't have comprehensive coverage. It won't rebuild the business that supplied the jobs that paid their bills. Government agencies can not pay all the bills. They can offer certain assistance, but it won't be enough! Plans were NOT designed to make people whole...no matter who is President, Senator or Congressman. Plans to help after floods were designed to help COMMUNITIES recover and limitations apply to individuals. I don’t care about politics, but I do care about people.
