The Swamp:

Republican John McCain, who starts his campaign for the White House against Democrat Barack Obama a few points down in national polls, says: “I consider myself an underdog.”

“I think we have a great challenge in this campaign,” said McCain, the senior senator from Arizona, at a press conference today. “I think the economy and the challenges that we face are significant…

“I know I have to out-campaign my opponent in every respect,” McCain said. “I consider myself an underdog.”

McCain is portraying his rival as a tax-and-spender, but Obama is arguing that investment in health care and other matters is essential to the nation’s vitality. And the money necessary can be found, he suggests, if the war in Iraq is brought to an end.

“I recognize that my agenda is ambitious, particularly in light of Bush Administration fiscal policies that have run up the national debt by over $4 trillion,” Obama said. “We are financially pinched, there’s no doubt about it.

“But the answer to fiscal problems is not to continue shortchange investments in education, energy, innovation, infrastructure, investments that our vital to our long-term growth. That’s not the right way to go. Instead, we need to end the war in Iraq.”
