For the story - -
Nigerian ambassador Martin Uhomoibhi has been elected to head the United Nations Human Rights Council and has pledged to act as a “bridge” between the often-fractious groups within the body.
“As an African I shall be a bridge between East and West, North and South,” Mr Uhomoibhi told the 47-member council after being elected by acclamation.
“I have no interest to elevate one over the other.”
Mr Uhomoibhi succeeds Romania’s Doru Romulus Costea, who himself took over from the council’s inaugural president, Mexican Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba.
The council was set up in 2006 to replace the widely discredited Human Rights Commission, but has itself come under fire for factionalism and a perceived over-concentration on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Mr Uhomoibhi said he would continue the work of his predecessors to break down what he called the “block syndrome” in the work of the council, adding he was in favour of “cross-regional, cross-cultural and cross-civilisation dialogue”.
“I shall respect all shades of opinion although I shall cling to my own beliefs and convictions without allowing them to impede my judgement or conflict with my duties as president,” he said.
The council will hold its next regular session from September 8-26.

Why is this newsworthy?
June 20th, 2008 at 6:36 amAbout as much as sun rose this morning.
Why is the UN still on American soil?
There’s a story.
The Useless Nations will never fucking learn.
June 20th, 2008 at 6:44 amYeah well before this Syria was the head of human rights council. its par for the course these days. the UN is useless and more importantly, its dangerous. we need them off of US soil right now
June 20th, 2008 at 6:48 amYeah, but maybe we should elect him for the sake of his skin color.
Oh damn - wrong thread…
June 20th, 2008 at 6:50 amThis is funny, the UN is basically just a joke that keeps getting better over time. Too bad the US sinks way too much time, money, and credibility into it.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:02 amThe UN is an outdated flawed idea, one that was conceived with the kind of hope and change Obama spouts today, but from conception was always vulnerable to corrupt influences relying heavily on the integrity or lack thereof of its member officials.
It has achieved little in way of lasting peace over the years and has for the most part become a forum and soapbox for madmen and their ideologues - to bend the will of international opinion and further their own diabolical means and agendas. It is defunct in many ways, a bureaucratic mess and embarrassment with little to no prestige and its continued existence only serves to benefit those under its shady auspices.
It’s a circus for clowns in zegna suits who without real mandates can’t enforce much beyond the boundaries of its headquarters. A waste of time, money, and energy, a failed corrupt venture open to abuse and doomed from day one.
Old world diplomacy/affirmative action, circa 500BC Spartan style is what we need more of i.e a deep dark pit to kick the butts of tyrants and their mouthpieces into when they so much as suggest wiping countries of the map.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:55 amClose the UN now. Revoke all diplomatic immunity for all non democratic governments. Deport anyone who has any slightest links with terrorists. Stop all financial support to the UN.
Require whatever time and money we have invested to be audited by a completely transparent entity. Don’t spend 1 more US taxpayer dollar on the UN insanity.
Start a new league of democratic nations. Us the UN building to house the homeless or something constructive which helps the USA. Stop the waste, time, and human resources to supprt the dead carcass of a dinosaur.
Wake up America
