WTF? F-16 Shoots Up This SUV, With Our Guys Inside, In Utah!

Major Fuck-up…here’s the explanation withat came with this pic. Nods to Steve in NC…
Last April 9th, at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, two soldiers were driving a rented SUV about five kilometers from the part of the range used for live firing.
It was at night, and an F-16 that thought it was firing at something in the live fire area, lit up the SUV instead.
Only 70 20mm rounds were fired.
Fortunately, the two people in the SUV were only injured (both from flying glass, the passenger got a dislocated shoulder as he rapidly exited the vehicle when it quickly turned off the road and stopped.) The investigation of how this happen has not been completed.
I’m wondering what those guys were drinking…er, thinking.

I hope they opted for the extended coverage on that rental contracted.

Oh, well, that’s okay then.
WTF?! The author needs to go find himself in the proximity of ONE 20mm round fired in his direction, and then go back and apply a pretty brutal re-write to that sentence!
June 13th, 2008 at 7:13 amFortunately the practice rounds are less lethal than the real thing. One fully explosive round would have killed them all.
June 13th, 2008 at 7:27 amI hope this doesn’t get picked up by the demedia. I can just see the headline; Gas-guzzling SUV Causes Friendly Fire Incident.
June 13th, 2008 at 7:48 amDeath to gas-guzzlers
That said, how in the Fk could anything like this possibly happen?? The F16 pilot needs some serious talking to.
June 13th, 2008 at 7:48 amI wonder…will this affect that pilot’s next OER?

June 13th, 2008 at 12:24 pmIf the F16 fired a warning flare and flashed it’s lights, the SUV should have pulled to the side of the road. They got what was coming to them.
June 13th, 2008 at 12:46 pm@YutYut It doesn’t look like the f16 did that…. why would he do it to training targets? Read the article again
June 13th, 2008 at 12:58 pmErm. This should be abundantly obvious, but if it isn’t, Zolkowski, YutYut was joking.
June 13th, 2008 at 1:45 pmThose firing ranges are huge. One time at 29 Palms myself (Cpl) with our XO were trying to take chow to our FOs while our battery was active, firing 155 missions at night. Dozens and dozens of rounds.
We were blacked out, no night vision, full moon and no gear available. Was danger close for sure.
No matter how good the training parameters are, the unintended can happen.
Got to wonder how the POV was out there though.
