BAGHDAD, July 4 (VOI) – An Iraqi government spokesman said on Friday that the footage televised by the Qatari Aljazeera news channel showing an overt execution allegedly carried out in Karbala was fabricated, adding the Iraqi government would reserve the right to sue the channel.
“The footage has been of the execution of five Afghans found guilty of raping and killing a girl. The execution occurred in al-Karj area in Iran, where the citizens have been exchanging the videos six months ago in Tehran,” Ali al-Dabbagh said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).
The Doha-based Aljazeera had broadcast during a late hour on Thursday footage of a public execution it said the Iraqi police carried out in the southern Iraq holy Shiite province of Karbala.
“The material aired by Aljazeera showed policemen in their white uniforms and shoes, which is the Iranian police uniform,” Dabbagh added, noting that the Iraqi government “is warning Aljazeera against this aggressive and fabricating media approach that does not reflect a credibility a news channel must observe.”
Dabbagh said the Iraqi government is preserving its right to file a lawsuit against the all-news Qatari channel.
