A couple seasons ago “24″ actually had an episode or two regarding this …

Yup. That’s why military systems are generally hardened. It’s hard to know how well those precautions will work, though. It only takes one flaw or failure point to let enough energy into a system to fry it. Normal commercial equipment will be toast, however.

Military hardware is poorly shielded today. Nothing like it was in the early 80’s.

Faster, lighter, quicker are counter to EMP shielding.

Can we set off a small one over D.C.??

Yupe I’ve been staring at this one for about 15 years.

Every plane falls out of the sky.
Every vehicle with a computer or electronic ignition just fails.
It’s no joke and it ain’t about watching T.V.

This affects anything that uses electricity.
Cars, trucks, computers and electrical grid.

Another thought: the way to thwart EMP is to wrap your device in a copper sheathing. That way the electrical charge is made to go around the device.
What EMP does is to overload an electrical system with too much electricity, so it gets fried.

Oh yeah the worries about this have been on the radar for a long time now. its a very scary and very real possibility. to put it it simply, a nation could not recover from something like this. it would completely shut down all business which means there would never be enough revenue coming to fix the damage.

There are some measures you can take:

Life could be hard, but it’s generally better than the alternative. We managed to function without electricity for the most part 100 years ago. I had relatives in the Ozarks that didn’t have electricity until the 1950’s. We could recover - it will just require some real work.
