That as a kid my feet would be covered with black tar on the Santa Barbara beaches from natural seepage. The beaches are absolutely clean now. Veneco is one of the major platform companies and do an excellent job. Check out their website at: www.venocoinc.com I have to admit, given how liberal UCSB is, I was totally shocked to hear a UCSB professor state it would be wiser for use to drill for oil than have third world countries delivering oil to us. That is where the divers and fishermen go if they want to spear or catch something. Safe and clean to drill offshore. They take the pounding from the seas for at least 20 years. The jackets located off of the mouth of the Mississippi River are even designed to withstand huge mudslides. To top it all off there are a located above faultlines. True these are insulated by layer upon layer of sediment, but they do withstand tremors. Let's face it oil collects according to the faultlines and oil producing areas are full of them. This is one of the things that seismic surveys look for.
