As a kid walking along the beach of Topsail Island, N.C. I loved looking for bits of blue, clear, and green glass (heh! … foreshadowing of the future, eh?) rounded by the sandy surf, and shark’s teeth. Were more treasured by me than any shells.
Then there were those tangles of heavy fishing line from the fishing boats, sea weed, garbage, cigarette butts, and assorted other tangly stuff. But I had to look … sort through it, often times snagging on a stray fishing hook or beer can tab (a WHAT?) Once I found a cool wooden beaded necklace. the clasp had been broken, and some of the beads lost. But I was able to make a bracelet from the remains to wear for the rest of our trip down there … until losing it in the surf.
Flotsam and Jetsam … All life is such … Everything we do, everything we don’t do … everything we encounter seems to wash ashore at sometime or another. Sometimes it is retrieved and preserved … Sometimes it is returned to the foamy wash …
And then there are times when [some] people just plain chose to walk past it, completely ignore it’s possible value … not caring just how inviting and important the shiny glint is peeping up at them from the tangle … They just let it all float on back out to sea in the next tide …

Another Barack Obama earmark turns up in the news. For a candidate who has made earmark reform an obsession, John McCain hasn’t done much to point out some of Obama’s more embarassing and egregious earmarks. They do seem to be a powerful example of Old Politics.

Michelle Obama buying $600 earings? (Sounds like something Nancy Reagan would have gotten bashed for.) Surprised she didn’t put it toward ritzy summer camps. Hey, the lady’s rich, and she should spend her money any way she wants. (But spare us the whining.)
I don’t understand the purpose of Obama publicly insulting Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Maybe it’s part of his effort to demonstrate he won’t be a shoot-from-the hip cowboy who damages our international relationships.
Only the New York Times would point out that Obama speaks no foreign language but ridicule Mitt Romney for speaking French. Funny how they thought it was trés distingué that John Kerry spoke French.
