I wonder when Iran will go to war with Syria because of this….

Beirut, Updated 29 Jul 08, - Syria’s ambassador to the United States on Monday called for ending the “state of war” with longtime foe Israel, weeks after the two states announced the launch of indirect peace talks.

“We desire to recognize each other and end the state of war,” Imad Mustafa told a gathering of activists in Washington allied with Israel’s Peace Now movement, in remarks broadcast on Israeli army radio.

“Here is then a grand thing on offer. Let us sit together, let us make peace, let us end once and for all the state of war.”

He added however that any peace agreement would depend on an Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights, which the Jewish state occupied in the 1967 war and annexed in 1981.

His remarks came just two weeks after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Damascus would establish “normal” relations with Israel, including the opening of embassies, if the Turkish-mediated talks lead to a peace deal.

The launch of indirect talks between the two longtime enemies, who have technically been at war since 1948, was revealed in May, following an eight-year freeze in May.

The talks had previously foundered in 2000 on the question of the strategic Golan plateau, which runs down to the shores of the Sea of Galilee, Israel’s main source of fresh water, and is currently home to some 20,000 Jewish settlers.

Israel has demanded that Syria cut its ties with Hizbullah, the Palestinian Hamas movement, and other armed groups pledged to the Jewish state’s demise, as well as distance itself from Iran.(AFP)

Israel and Syria are separated by Lebanon and Jordan. Lebanon is essentially controlled by Hezbollah. Hezbollah is at constant war with Israel and controlled by Iran. So, it seems advantageous for Syria to say this so they can remove themselves from the confrontational discussions.

It seems to be the advantage of fighting through proxies.

If this is true, it would be a landmark accomplishment and hopefully defang Iran, Hamas and Hizbollah.

So when will Barack Hussein Obama take Credit!

  4. Kurt(the infidel)

it sure will be a major accomplishment. the US did stop talking negatively about Syria a while back. so maybe they decided staying that way would work better for them.

Ha Ha… Now thats too funny! And if this “state of peace” were to exist. What would happen? Do you think Syria would stop the Iranian arms from flowing into lebanon? Think the flow of fighters from Syria into Lebanon would stop? Some one tell me … Whats in this for Isreal? Of yeah, in order to get this “peace” Isreal has to give up the territorial advantage, right?

This isnt jack shit except for more arab fuck fuck.

i’ll believe it when I see it

Nate’s right. The Syrians attack Israel through the fog of plausible deniability that their terrorist proxies provide them - they know better than to get into a direct armed confrontation with the IDF. I’m calling bullshit on this statement, although Olmert is probably desperate and stupid enough to buy it.

I too am reluctant to believe them, however who could blame them after the IAF pwned them back in September? Even with Olmert as PM, they pulled off a sensational sneak attack!

Nancy Peloski will take credit. Remember her saying the road to peace leads through Damascus, and she went there in her little ragscarf and kissed Assad’s ring?

What’s the chance that some cowboy diplomacy is working? Remember Libya?
