The U.S. Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management plans to hold an oil and natural-gas lease sale in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska next month.

The agency announced its intention to hold the sale on Sept. 24 in a Federal Register notice published today. The area in Alaska could hold 3 billion barrels of oil.

Interior Department officials said in July that the first lease sale would include 2.6 million acres and drilling could start between 2010 and 2012.

The new area for lease doesn’t include 219,000 acres of Teshekpuk Lake and defers leasing for 10 years on 430,000 acres north and east of the lake. Environmental groups challenged an earlier plan for leasing in the area and in September 2006 won a federal court ruling to block the lease sale.

Even the liberals I know are getting tired of this environdementalism. They wont give up on it, but they are more willing to bend. It hits their pocket books too.
