He contacted the U.S. military and went through some basic training moves with his daughter. She passed with flying colors, but he had, let's say, a litte more difficulty. If memory serves correctly, I watched him greeting wounded soldiers once at Walter Reed Hospital. He really teared up. He says he doesn't drink and has never taken drugs. My daughter and I love to watch this show because of the kids. As other have mentioned, both kids are very well adjusted. If you get a chance to watch the entire roast and watch, near the end, when he shakes the hand of each service member, he goes from Gene the rock star to a grateful American of those who serve.
