Not having been a soldier, I have to ask: wouldn’t it take a long time to reload if the rounds were fired off so fast? I like the fast rate of fire, but what would you do in a firefight when you need lots of rounds and you need them all the time? Any soldiers have any ideas?

What’s that barrel made of? Helluva an alloy

They might have kept taping to show us how long it takes to change out the barrel because that one’s more than likely toast.

It fires from an open bolt so that is at least part of the reason the barrel and everything else isn’t melting. That is double the rate of fire of Ma Deuce if memory serves. Less heat in the bolt and carrier also means greater reliability. Looks like a cool weapon. If it can perform in the field, it could be winner.

Also the ammo feeds from cans through a conveyor like system, not a belt so essentially reloading would mean swapping out cans or dumping more rounds in the hopper. Lots of current weapon systems use this system.

-old sailor- in most situation we fire in short bursts, roughly 5-7 seconds, or about as long as it takes to say “Die muther f***er Die!” We started doing that as to not ramp up the heat too high and also its better for keeping on target, so rounds don’t go as fast as you might think. But with this piece and some depleted uranium rounds you wouldn’t need a very long burst to pretty much take care of anything you could dream up in your wildest imagination.

Man I LOVE this age of technology!! The barrel must be made of Viagraphite.

Open bolts tend to suck in dust/sand environments, particularly if you are firing on the move from ground vehicles.

Gota be a hell of a barrel thou, ceramics maybe.

The barrel is probably made the same as the one on the M60E4 which you can watch here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAdC8L2oUIQ
