This looks like a “re-creation” instead of filming the actual one, because IIRC Czolgosz actually smoked and caught on fire. Additionally, I recall that it took more than 17 minutes to actually kill him, because this execution occured during the “War of the Currents” and Edison had convinced everyone that his rival, Nikola Tesla’s “alternating current” was far more deadly than Edison’s “direct current,” and so they tried to fry the guy with AC instead of DC. Big mistake, because if I remember my electrical theory correctly, AC travels along the surface of a conductor instead of through its body, as does DC.
As a further insult, Edison tried to get the electrocution process called “Westinghoused to death,” (akin to “getting a Lewinski”) because Tesla’a major backer at the time was George Westinghouse.
Edison’s machinations went up in flame, along with Czolgosz’s head, when news of the disasterous execution was reported.
I find it richly ironic that Edison made a movie out of it — and to spare his reputation any further insult he obviously toned it down as seen in this film.
