CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama attacked Republican rival John McCain as a tool of big oil companies in a television ad released on Monday.

Seeking to tap into Americans’ anger over soaring gasoline prices, Obama’s ad opens with a shot of a driver pumping gas and refers to huge profits made by oil companies in the past year.

“Every time you fill your tank, the oil companies fill their pockets,” a narrator says. “Now Big Oil’s filling John McCain’s campaign with $2 million in contributions.”

The ad shows McCain standing next to fellow Republican President George W. Bush as the narrator says, “After one president in the pocket of big oil — we can’t afford another.”

The ad touts Obama’s plan to offer American families $1,000 tax breaks to help offset higher energy costs as well as the Illinois senator’s proposal for a tax on windfall oil company profits. It accuses McCain, an Arizona senator, of seeking to give oil companies additional tax breaks.

The McCain campaign said the ad was misleading and failed to mention that the Republican candidate voted against a 2005 bill that provided billions in tax breaks for energy producers, including oil companies aimed at offering incentives for domestic energy production.

Obama voted for the bill, which was backed by Bush.

“Barack Obama’s latest negative attack ad shows his celebrity is matched only by his hypocrisy,” McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

“Also not mentioned is the $400,000 from big oil contributors that Barack Obama has already pocketed in this election,” Bounds said.

With U.S. voters anxious about $4 a gallon gasoline amid economic weakness and a deteriorating job market, Obama plans to focus on the topic of energy. He is to travel to Lansing, Michigan, on Monday and will make stops in Ohio and Indiana on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Obama’s proposal for a windfall oil profits tax has drawn criticism from those who say it proved to be counterproductive when it was last put in place in the United States in 1980 during the final year of President Jimmy Carter’s administration.

Those critics say the measure prompted oil companies to cut back on domestic production while failing to raise as much in tax revenue as lawmakers expected. It was repealed in 1988 during the Reagan administration.

Obama’s aggressive new ad is the latest salvo in an intensifying battle on the airwaves. In ads that have drawn controversy, McCain has sought to cast Obama as an arrogant “celebrity” candidate who lacks the substance to lead.

An ad titled “Celeb” features shots of socialite-actress Paris Hilton and singer Britney Spears as well as shots of Obama speaking at a huge campaign event to try to imply that he is more of a celebrity icon than a potential chief executive.

The only real Big Oil are all the worlds “Nationalized” oil conglomerates and cartels who control world oil supplies. We are talking trillions not billions. But we won’t be seeing Chavez’, or Putin’s, or China’s oil profit sheets anytime soon.

It would have been easier for Hussein to just dress up like robin hood and flat out say that he plans on stealing from the rich and giving it to the poor. Or, just say “vote for me, and I’ll give you 1000 bucks!” And the fucking liberals say that Bush bought an election…pathetic.

Im sick of this “big oil” horseshit we hear from the left. seriously. US oil companies do not control the world price on oil and cannot sell it for cheaper. If we started drilling in the US and not export any oil then we could completely skip past OPEC and then US oil companies could set the price favorably for us, but not until then.

Obama has nothing to run on. he is an empty suit

Attention all returning and retiring vets. The Messiah wants you to turn in your rifles for tire gauges:
As president, Barack Obama will ensure that more of our veterans can enter the new energy economy. He will create a new “Green Vet Initiative” that will have two missions: first it will offer counseling and job placement to help veterans gain the skills to enter this rapidly growing field; second, it will work with industry partners to create career pathways and educational programs.
And meanwhile Messiah beverages and tobacco are showing profits of 19.1 % and I believe your campaign is showing 100% profit and your business is spreading BS.

Just to prove what a crock of crap that commercial is, I ask each American to answer two questions:

    (1) When the price of crude was $147 a few weeks back, that meant that each barrel of crude purchased by any oil company $3.50 per gallon (42 gallons per barrel). Now add in about 50¢ for your government fed and state (some higher; some lower) so we are now at about $4.00 a gallon, including cost + taxes. Unless O’Bambi can prove to you it is absolutely free to refine, transport, and distribute oil, subtract four dollars from each gallon you pay and ask yourself, “who is making the real money off my purchase?”

    (2) If McCain (more specifically Republicans) are in bed with big oil, why is the word “windfall profit’s tax” mentioned with only respect to petroleum? Why not all corporations across all spectrums of business?

    (3) During the years of the “windfall profit’s tax” fiasco, not only did the price of gasoline go up, but you got to wait in line to purchase it while it was rationed. Is this a history you would like repeat?

    (4) Who do you think will get to ultimately pay for the windfall profit’s tax? The oil companies or the consumer?

Here’s the real story on O’Bambi’s economic policies…

What an idiot? Why don’t we put windfall profits on the entertainment industry? It’s ridiculous how much concert tickets and movie prices and cds are. Look at how much Dark Knight made. Look at the amount celebs are making. Oh yeah I forgot they fill the pockets of Obama’s campaign.

    More non-solutions from the Democrats.

Communism will set you free of big oil. Then you can get your grey suit at the public recycler and your car from, oh wait, you don’t get a car. Pick up your bicycle on the way out, they have refurbished but they still ride ok, mostly.

These Obamma-nuats are simplton Marxist ideologues, they think calling it ‘big oil’ makes you mad. I say every time you fill up, you get madder. Didn’t we learn all that from Saul Alinsky?

You mean owned by capitalism? I would hope so! Better than being owned by the government, like hussein, which is socialism/communism.
