Russia: Forget Georgian Territorial Integrity
Aug 14, 2008 - MOSCOW - Russia’s foreign minister says the question of Georgia’s territorial integrity is a dead issue, a sign that Moscow could absorb two separatist regions in the wake of recent fighting.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the statement Thursday simultaneously with the announcement that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was meeting in the Kremlin with the separatist regions’ leaders.
Lavrov tells reporters, “One can forget about any talk about Georgia’s territorial integrity.” That’s because he believes it’s impossible to persuade South Ossetia and Abkhazia that they can be forced to be a part of Georgia

August 14th, 2008 at 6:36 amGee, where are the complaints of “imperialist aggression” and “expansionist policies” coming from the liberal intelligentia and their puppets in the MSM?
Doesn’t sound like Russia is making plans for the Georgians to be able to run their own country and have their own army after the conflict….hmmm…..
August 14th, 2008 at 7:51 amVictor Davis Hanson’s analysis:
Military intervention is out of the question. Economic sanctions, given Russia’s oil and Europe’s need for it, are a pipe dream. Diplomatic ostracism and moral stricture won’t even save face.
Instead, Europe — both western and eastern — along with the United States and the concerned former Soviet Republics need to sit down, conference, and plot exactly how these new democracies are to maintain their independence and autonomy in the next decade. Hopefully, they will reach the Franklinesque conclusion that “We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”
