    Looked like an airburst.

It looked like CG to me.

The russians barely had color film back then, and it was of such low resolution, that you almost couldn’t read a streetsign from more than 10 feet away.

  3. Old Sailor

It was supposed to be about 50 megatons.

Two years later the test ban treaty was signed by JFK. That meant that atomic R&D went digital and supercomputing became extremely important to the government. For a while there was a calculator gap between the US and USSR, we had desk top calculators and they had slide rulers. Thats pretty important when it comes to missile trajectories and atomic physics, so the USSR was very eager to buy American calculators and reverse engineer them. I can only imagine what our most powerful weapon designed on supercomputers would be capable of.

    That was Perrrty.

    That’s the most beautiful thin I’ve ever seen . . .

  8. German Dragon

That’s CGI. The real 50-megaton bomb was aircraft-deliverable, and the film footage of the drop was included in “Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie.”

Well, if you have to go, I want to go that way.

Looks like the gates of hell truely openend for a moment in time just to be shut back again. May none of us ever have to see such a thing in reality.

  13. Birdeye

CG. Got fooled on that one bud.
