What this tells me:Russia: “If you go back to your homes, we are going to kill you.”
TBILISI, Georgia (AP) – The U.N. says Russian soldiers are telling thousands of refugees in Georgia who want to return to their homes that their security can’t be guaranteed.
Melita Sunjic, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner of Refugees in Georgia, says that it was not clear if Russian soldiers were actually preventing refugees from returning, but the warnings by the troops effectively block them.
Some 2,000 refugees are at UNHCR camps in Gori, and possibly thousands of others are in the region.
All hope to return to villages that are in the “security zones” that Russia has claimed for itself. Many are on Georgian territory south of the border with the separatist region of South Ossetia.
