Saturday Night Memories…Boot Camp, Maggots - With Video

Most realistic depiction of Boot Camp I have ever seen in a film. Only difference being by the time I hit basic in 1982, they weren’t allowed to hit you anymore…

In 2003 the solution to no longer being allowed to strike a recruit was to move the practice into the “rain room” and post a sentry at the front hatch. While I don’t condone senseless beatings, I think most drill instructors are pretty judicious about who needs to have a little extra attention. Some folks just don’t get the point unless you lay hands on them, I was such a recruit. I’d like to think that I made a good Marine. The credit belongs to a drill instructor who’s name I’ll never forget, and the occasion where he repeatedly punched me in the gut for stealing M&Ms out of the duty hut. I haven’t stolen M&Ms since
August 23rd, 2008 at 11:03 pmMy Navy boot camp in 1979 was a lot easier compared to the Marines, but it was no cake walk either.
Like you, Bash, there was no hitting; just a lot of shouting, pushups, running and busyness. That was the bad old days of Sarge and Beetle Bailey. Good riddance, too. That kind of roughness is unnecessary and out of bounds.

August 24th, 2008 at 3:16 amBoot camp. Punches from head to belt, butt strokes, strangling. At the time I considered it combat training and never thought it detrimental
The harder we train, the less we die…
August 24th, 2008 at 9:40 amIts all about spin…. its not a hit its a motivational assistance.
The biggest bullshit now is that recruits are no longer allowed to shout kill at the top of their lungs…. instead its something gay like fight or some crap
August 24th, 2008 at 10:17 amIn my day, US Army mid 70’s, it certainly was not hands or feet off. But, I came out a far better man, not a far weaker boy. Ready for Charlie, Ivan, or whoever the case may have been.
May God bless the “Green Machine” of the Us Military across the board!
By the way, I did dream many a dream about old “Mary Jane Rottencroch.”
