While I don't condone senseless beatings, I think most drill instructors are pretty judicious about who needs to have a little extra attention. Some folks just don't get the point unless you lay hands on them, I was such a recruit. I'd like to think that I made a good Marine. The credit belongs to a drill instructor who's name I'll never forget, and the occasion where he repeatedly punched me in the gut for stealing M&Ms out of the duty hut. Like you, Bash, there was no hitting; just a lot of shouting, pushups, running and busyness. That was the bad old days of Sarge and Beetle Bailey. Good riddance, too.
