"They’re starting to think of themselves as Iraqis, not as hostages to hyphenated, sectarian identities."

Now if only we could get that to happen in this country and get rid of the mindset of those who think of themselves as African-American, Mexican-American, Asian-American, etc.

I have a very low opinion of muslims in general. Pakistanis, who I've had plenty of dealings with, in particular are almost beneath my contempt.

But the Iraqis seem to have a better understanding, and hunger for, democracy and national unity than many Americans.

This is a good thing. As stated before if we can bring our own country to this type of mindset we would be much better off. I hate when I am asked on forms what nationality I am. I'm an American!! nothing else of the family history matters. Confuses the heck out of people when I write that in. LOL

I think the average everyday Muslim doesn't buy into the Mullahs power hungry hateful version. Just as the average Christian did not buy into the Crusades years ago in history. Extremist of any religion are dangerous and wrong. I do think the average muslim has lived in fear so long they did not know how to speak out and are just now getting their voice. I hope one day we can all just accept faith and not use doctrines to control others. One God.. Many versions of honoring him. When religion is used to hurt others it is not true faith. I think the muslims are now seeing that and are speaking out to stop their faith from being bastardized into hate. It's a slow process but I am hopeful. Like Christians in this nation speaking out against the like of Fred Phelps. Never a more hateful group in the name of Christianity and we all know they are not what being a Christian is.
