Brussels: Iran missed an informal Saturday deadline to respond to an offer by major powers on its nuclear programme, a European Union official said.
Major powers asked Iran on July 19 to respond within two weeks to their offer to hold off from imposing more UN sanctions if Tehran froze expansion of its nuclear work.
Iran has dismissed the idea of having a deadline to reply.
“There is nothing new (from Iran),” one EU official said on Saturday, adding that the bloc did not really expect an answer over the weekend.
“One should not focus on the deadline too much…what matters is that we get a clear answer quickly, it’s not a matter of one day,” said the official.
European diplomats say they are ready to wait a few more days beyond Saturday’s informal deadline for an answer.

August 2nd, 2008 at 10:05 amEuropean diplomats cannot stop the inevitable. I think they’ve finally realized that Tehran has gone way beyond the half way point in terms of enrichment and also in deceiving foreign inspection teams.
Recent intelligence indicates a third hidden reactor has been located in a densely populated area in sth-west Iran.
Israel has little option but to go on the offensive and soon.
August 2nd, 2008 at 11:26 amWe have multiple options in our relationships with Iran. Among them would be the continuation of the present status of using threat by USA and Israel, or a robust start of diplomatic interaction. Anatol Lieven and Trita Parsi recent article:

Drawing a red line with Iran provides a realistic expectation for both USA and Iran. Let us stay cool and use diplomatic rules of engagement and talk with Iran.
Similar to the past 45 years, Israel would continue to be a negative influence in our relationship with Iran. This problem is not knew, even during Mohammad Reza Pahlavi

Iran suffered in her interaction with US due to the negative influence of Israel and her lobbies.
I fully support the recent initiative of the President Bush to follow diplomacy and opening an American Interest Section in Tehran, Iran.
August 2nd, 2008 at 2:20 pmIHT is owned by the NYT, and is just another socialist appeasing mouthpiece of the Democrats dhimmi machine. Anatoli Lieven is also a pawn of Ted Halstead who founded the New American Foundation an organization that views itself as “the radical centre” - in reality they are radically left of center and heavily anti-Israel.
This is what the Dem’s do they inject foreigners like Lieven into political discourse and present them as neutral observers when in reality that is farthest from the truth. Most all his op-ed pieces on the ME going back to 2000 and before promote international condemnation of Israel for protecting herself. I can’t say I recall ever reading an editorial of his that doesn’t embrace some kind of anti-Americanism, whether subtle or blatant.
August 2nd, 2008 at 3:18 pmI think Iran has every right to build its N.Weapons agaianst the most possible Israeli attacks. Israel attacked every neighbor–Iraq, Syria etc. So lets Iran has its own N.Weapons.

robin……there won’t be any Iranian nuclear weapons
August 2nd, 2008 at 6:46 pmrobin you falafel,
You’re confusing condensed milk with enriched uranium, and attacking with defending.
Israel is surrounded by 500+ million muslims, and many extremists groups who prefer she don’t exist, she has every right to defend herself from planned extinction.
Muslim and Islamist apologists are shitting bricks knowing Iran will be sent back to the stone age soon. I wouldn’t worry too much it’s not that big of a loss for the mullahs, they were getting their jollies off with mountain goats during stone age times too.
