    Drillanwr,
    my best guess is that it is a display, to gain or maintain status. The sin of pride. They are truly in mourning, BUT why do they have to SHOW that they are grieving more than their neighbor?

    I liken it to Christ’s comparison of the Pharisee who puts on a display in the Temple and shouts out his prayers vs. the humble man who shuts himself in a darkened closet to pray quietly. Whom does God hear?
