Texas School District To Let Teachers Carry Guns

HOUSTON - A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district’s superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.
The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district’s superintendent, David Thweatt.
School experts backed Thweatt’s claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom.
Thweatt said it is a matter of safety.
“We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, ‘What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?” he said. “It’s just common sense.”
Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials, he said.
Recent school shootings in the United States have prompted some calls for school officials to allow students and teachers to carry legally concealed weapons into classrooms.
The U.S. Congress once barred guns at schools nationwide, but the U.S. Supreme Court struck the law down, although state and local communities could adopt their own laws. Texas bars guns at schools without the school’s permission.

Good for them, best deterrence is a hard target.
The Isrealis have been doing this for years to better protect their students.
When seconds matter the police are only minutes away!

August 15th, 2008 at 1:50 pmI don’t recall any episodes of someone shooting up a school and “jumping on a highway” Of all the school shootings I’ve heard, they came students. already INSIDE the school. Texans crack me up. Any excuse to arm themselves. I’ve heard armadillos can get pretty fierce. There’s a good excuse. Wasn’t it around there, that a chuch wanted to hand out guns to teens at a church function to get them more interested in joining, or something equally inane?
August 15th, 2008 at 3:48 pmjojo,
What on earth are you talking about? You make no sense. “Jumping on a highway” is NOWHERE to be found in the article — only in your comment.
If the shooter(s) ARE students, you moron, the ONLY solution is to have someone already inside the school ALSO be armed.
I believe you may be referring to a recent story about a church raffle offering a hunting rifle as a prize in order to raise money to fund youth activities, quite common in hunting areas. Adults were selling, and buying the tickets.

August 15th, 2008 at 4:54 pmMake sure the local cops get the memo; if they respond to a shooting at a school they will shoot anyone seen with a weapon. They don’t know the difference between an active shooter and a pistol packing teacher.
Gone are the days of “freeze/drop it” it’s now

August 15th, 2008 at 7:03 pmHey Playjojo so what ur saying is that the school will be safer if the teachers are not armed……. hmmmmmm I don’t think you thought that through. The Israelis have had plenty of situations where gunmen run in and get carried out because the teachers were packing your agruement/comment is non sequitar
