What an inspiring man Gunny Pop is. And not only in terms of what he’s done, but in how he thinks. Guy knows how to keep his eyes focused on the positive, and is clearly a man imbued with the simple faith that the better angels of our nature, will ultimately carry the day. It was very interesting to hear what he had to say about the VA,and how clearly he understood from very early on what it was going to take to win this war, and how he too, felt that the media and others back home were often doing no favors ( and I’m keeping it low-key here) for the troops they “supported” with their coverage.

When I first got back, I reported that the vast majority of Marines supportd the war, wanted to finish the fight, and not be “rescued”like little children in a burning building by these poltically motivated journalists, elected officials and self-appointed mother figures like Code Vagina. The left said I was as full of as I could be. “No one wants to stay in Iraq.”

I hope those of you who were not in Iraq, when listening to the Marines on these shows, are getting the sense that I was telling the truth, that I was not politically spinning. It’s almost eeire how many of them have nearly the exact same thing to say their perspective on the war, the media, the politicians, and the truth about what was happening in Iraq.

Think of all the activity we’ve discussed on the show that was happening in Ramadi. So much of it was about a turnaround, a slow but detail-rich turnaround in the worst spot in country, and none of that was reported to you. You now know it’s true: the argument that the press refused to cover good news is not just a political spin argument, it is the truth. More and more I’d like these shows to take care of the annoing arguments you have about the media, the wars in Iraq and afghanistan, etc. Soon, you won’t even have to argue. Just email them an episode link, where they can get the reports from those who lived it, instead of the spin form those who wish to exploit it, and were never anywhere near it.

The end of the show was funny but not funny. I’ve got bronchitis, and start hacking, am holding it in, and finally have to put the phone down a sec, and let loose coughing in the hallway. So Iggy’s questioning Gunny, I’m fighting for air in the other room, Iggy’s finishing, the guest of honor is still on, and iggy turns it over to me. “So Pat, what’ve you got?” Silence. A little more…and then the faint sound of someone coughing up a lung in another room. Gunny and I communicated through email after, and we were both quite happy.

And how in’ cool was it to have Iggy back, on the JK Hour no less, and getting something rare and great: open media, no watchdogs from on high, Marine to Marine nitty gritty conversation about life during wartime?

And yes, there’ll be more of Iggy.

And yes, YA, in a rollout campaign in carefullly timed and laid out venues and styles, like a savage guerilla campaign, some indpedent some corporate designed both for impact today and as groundwork for the upcoming Afghanistan section begins this week.

This is a release for modern times, unlike anything you’ve seen before, for better or for worse. I said we’re gonna have .,.the last word, and we’re gonna have it. It’s a battle with the devil here on earth, and a wrap-up. Nothing is spun, but all traitors are hung.

I’m reallly killing myself folks. God, just give me the energy to get through this next month, with my little October surprise, so I can finally get out of this hell, and back to the war. “I’m a weirdo. I don’t belong here.” – Radiohead

And Knottie, i’ve been delinquent since I found out yesterday about your son. As I sit here wanting to say thanks and offer comfort to you and pay tribute to your son, the truth is, it’s extremely difficult for me to focus on any of the details of the matter, including those, because having seen these people, the enemy, personal and up so close that only one side was walking away still standing, I go black and blank with hatred and rage; I’m in the grip of that, and it’s hard to be thoughtful. And I don’t ever want to lose that hatred and rage. I don’t believe that hatred and rage “will eat me alive”. Sounds good, but I don’t know that it can be proven. Perhaps having hatred and rage that you don’t control, like any other impulse, will hurt you, give you diseases, “eat you alive”. But hatred and rage are our primary motivations to go through the hard work of seeking justice by damaging or killing our enemies, preserving our reputations, reputations which often spare us further attack by intimidating new challengers, preserving our self-respect, and stopping those who hurt, destroy and kill from doing it again, I don’t think an intellectual appreciation for achieving these things enough. There needs to be a violent spirit that moves us to unleash violence upon the deserving. One’s hatred and rage should have an appropriate amount of sway over us. Some people can’t handle it in their systems like some can’t handle alcohol or lust. That’s their problem, not mine. You, you probably should let go of yours, or “channel it into something poso, .tive” as is said, because you are in a situation where it is not your responsibility to eliminate the individuals and/or forces that caused your son’s departure. Your loss was part of a nation’s responsibility to triumph against those individuals and forces, and it will be done, for you and for all of us. And our hatred and our rage will be an essential reason for it. I can use a lot of fancy wordplay to argue agains that fact. But I can’t make it not true, even if I can make someone believe it’s not true.

I’ll write you an email, I’d like to speak a bit.

Praise from Gunny Pop for last night’s “Jihadi Killer Hour” Interview

Email from his publisher:

Pat,

I just heard the whole show. It was great! Got an email from the Popaditchs that said yours was the best interview yet, and that you seemed to understand him, his kind, and what he had experienced more than anyone else–and asked the best questions.

Nice work!

Best Regards,
