So long SAW?

Marine Corps Times:

Marine infantry units soon may replace their light machine guns with new automatic rifles designed to help gunners move faster on assaults.

Weapons officials at Marine Corps Systems Command in Quantico, Va., are testing magazine-fed weapons from at least six gun makers in a search for a lighter alternative to the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, which weighs close to 17 pounds unloaded.

At the squad level, “the biggest hindrance to being able to effectively fire and maneuver is the weight of the SAW,” said Patrick Cantwell, capability integration officer for the Infantry Automatic Rifle program at SysCom.

The winning IAR design — which the Corps wants to weigh no more than 12.5 pounds — could begin replacing the SAW in infantry squads as early as next year.

A Front Page headline on today’s New York Times:

Once Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes

and just below that we another one. Probably not another innuendo-rich smear, probably something positive to say to balance their coverage. Oh, what am I thinking? The people who wrote both of these articles want Hussein to be President.

Active Role for Palin’s Husband in Alaska Government

Now you’d think from the headline that his wife did something unethical and got him a high-paying government job. No, not at all. He’s not paid a penny, and there is no job. The article is about how Palin has conversations with her husband about her work, and how sometimes she may listen to his advice. And of course, it says he’s a meddler. McCain better watch out, cos apparently Palin’s husband is going to be really runnng America. But perhaps most of all, the article is bascially a smear, designed to make Sarah Palin look like a weak woman who really lets her husband run the government.

The death of journalism? No longer any such thing as journalists, just poltical operatives who write propaganda for their respective parties? A co-ordinatd, relentless, ruthless and lying campaign of character assassination against Palin?

I would really like to see what these stories would read like if the writer had to announce which candidate they intended to vote for in the opening paragraph.

I’d also be curious to see a roundup of NY Times quotes about Hussein that are as blatantly judgmental and negative as the ones in these stories.
