Barack Obama plans to air a 30-minute commercial just six days before Election Day, in what would be one of the largest ad buys in election history.
The Obama campaign confirmed that it has purchased the half-hour block of time on CBS, and is negotiating with other networks, so it can air a prime-time special at 8 p.m. ET on Oct. 29.
Obama and John McCain both spent millions to advertise during the Summer Olympics. But McCain’s purse strings have tightened since he transitioned to public financing, which limited his campaign to $84 million in the final two months of the race.
Obama, on the other hand, rejected public funding and has been far outspending McCain in advertising. He has also been airing commercials of up to two minutes in length.
Ross Perot famously aired a 30-minute ad during his independent presidential campaign in 1992, attracting 16.5 million viewers.
