The ‘Other’ Maverick

This was my democrat congressman … The ONLY democrat I voted for after switching republican.
Nobody Could Rip Congress A New One Like Traficant.
He was sloppy. He was obnoxious and loud-mouthed. He had REALLY bad hair. He wore cheap suits that didn’t fit. He was tricky. He made you doubt your sanity for supporting him.

“I was a Target!”
My conservative college kid blogging buddy down the road from me told me this:
I’ve heard from enough people to inform you of this, including a dear friend of his. Pres. Bush offered a pardon. But like he said, he’d die in prison before admitting to those charges.
Metz writes:
[ ... ] Let me be quite frank with you, Jim Traficant got screwed. When I look at the crimes he was accused of committing, I find it ridiculous he was sentenced to 8 years in prison! There are criminals who have done worse crimes, such as many convicted rapists who have truly hurt others. Nonetheless Jim Traficant has served 6.5 years in prison so far and will be able to get out a half a year early due to his good behavior over his tenure in jail. [ ... ]
Me: He’s right. I followed the trial … The ‘evidence’ and the supposed ‘gifts’ he ‘took’ from people was a drop in the proverbial bucket compared to New Jersey’s Robert Torricelli … who left congress after his hit the fan … but never went to trial or spent a day in prison over HIS gifts and such. And now he’s back in our Congress …
The democrats saw Traficant as a loose canon with a big mouth who made the mistake and told the truth in public, and on the floor of Congress. Yeah, he was an embarrassment. But so is Biden, Reid, Byrd, and frankly Pelosi. And don’t get me started on Cynthia McKinney. But you see, they all tow the party lihne. Traficant didn’t. He wouldn’t play ball with the dems in Congress. He never forgot where he came from. And didn’t care what party his constituents were with. He answered the phone and he helped you. I knew his wife briefly, and him also during my local media days. They [were] warm, friendly people.
Don’t be surprised if Pres. Bush has him on his pardon list before leaving office. If Jim lives that long. I hear he’s not doing so well.
